Central stars take on Northern at Shepparton

by Nathan Dole

A TEAM of 23 stars from Central Victoria Football women’s league will take on Northern Country in this Sunday’s inter-league match at Shepparton’s Deakin Reserve.

Victorious in last year’s match against Northern at Queen Elizabeth Oval in Bendigo, CVF makes the trek north.

A gun midfielder with Golden Square Football Netball Club, Hamish Morcom is aiming for back-to-back wins as the CVF women’s team coach.

All six clubs in the league are represented in Sunday’s match which starts at 1pm.

“All clubs nominated players for a training squad, which was more than 40,” Morcom said.

“It’s a mix of about fifty-fifty of players who represented the league last year, and those in for the first time.”

Morcom again believes versatility is a major strength of the CVF line-up.

“Some of the girls are on-ballers or midfielders for their club, but at inter-league may play on a back flank, forward flank, pocket or a wing.

“Being able to switch to different roles is what we looking for at selection.”

After missing last year’s inter-league match because of injury, North Bendigo’s Alana Long caps a great comeback by being captain for Sunday’s match.

“Alana has shown great leadership skills at training,” Morcom said.

The team’s on-field leader is likely to play at centre half-back or back flank.

“A key in football, no matter what level, is being able to rebound, especially from defence.

“Often the players with a lot of skill are running and setting up play from the half-back line.”

The midfield is likely to include Hannah Kenny, Liz Watkins and Jess Cox.

The talented trio will aim to capitalise on the tapwork of Dayna McGough in the ruck.

Strathfieldsaye’s Britney Mueck has kicked 31 goals for the Storm and will be a key target.

“It’s been a brilliant season by Britney,” said Morcom.

“There’s a lot of strengths to her game. Her ability to keep her eye on the ball and not be concerned about who or what’s going on around her means she wins a lot of contests.

“Britney is also an excellent kick for goal.”

Kangaroo Flat’s Kelly Mensforth is another skilful forward likely to play from a flank or pocket.

Training for CV started at Strathfieldsaye’s Triple M Park on June 21, and was followed by sessions at North Bendigo’s Hibo Hotel Oval on June 28, and Golden Square’s Fur Life Vet Oval on July 2.

Final training run and selection of a team of 23 and two emergencies was completed at Friday night’s run at Bendigo Mazda Oval in Kangaroo Flat’s Dower Park.
