Heartache for Pyramid Hill as Mitiamo wins by a point

by Nathan Dole

IT was heartache for Pyramid Hill and joy for Mitiamo as the Superoos won Sunday’s first semi-final in the Bendigo Bank Loddon Valley Football Netball League’s senior footy action by a point.

Pyramid Hill’s fighting spirit was to the fore as it struck back from a 33-point deficit at half-time of the clash at Marist College Oval in Maiden Gully to hit the lead in the last quarter.

The Superoos were off target, but a score of 2.6 to 3.4 in the last term clinched a 10.17 (77) to 11.10 (76) victory in week two of the Poyser Trucks Bendigo-backed finals series.

Ash Benbow and Thomas Grant led Mitiamo’s attack on two goals apiece.

Nathan Fitzpatrick kicked a game-high three goals for Pyramid Hill as Jack Woodward added two.

Best for the Superoos were Ash Benbow, Kyle Patten, Lucas Matthews, Aaron McKean, Dylan Clohesy and Max Simpson.

Pyramid Hill’s best were Riely Thiesz, Steven Gunther, Gavin James, Adrian Holland, Billy Micevski and Driscoll.

Unbeaten since an eight-point loss to Newbridge in round 14, Mitiamo takes on Maiden Gully YCW Eagles in next Saturday’s preliminary final at Marong.

The round 12 clash between the Superoos and Eagles ended in a 31-point win for Mitiamo on Maiden Gully YCW’s turf.

A third-quarter blitz put Newbridge well in control of Saturday’s second semi-final against Maiden Gully YCW Eagles at Pyramid Hill’s Mitchell Park.

Just nine points separated the teams at half-time.

The Maroons scored 6.5 to 1.1 in the third term as they surged to a 43-point lead.

Maiden Gully YCW fought back to score 5.1 in the last, but Newbridge added 6.2 to complete a 132-82 victory.

Maroons’ key forward Sam Mildren capped a best afield performance with six goals.

Chris Dixon and Rhys Ford added three goals apiece for the premiership favourites.

Maiden Gully YCW’s leading goalkickers were Luke Gray, three; Mitch Collins, Natnael McLaren and coach Wayne Mitrovic on two.

Mildren, Tyler Romeril, Tommy Horne, William Daly, Nathan Bacon and Zach Heaslip starred for Newbridge.

Best for the Eagles were McLaren, Ryan Walker, Matt Higgs, Bailey Graham, Joseph Coatsworth and Travis Mercadante.
