Maiden Gully YCW braces for fight from Bears

by Nathan Dole

ALTHOUGH a victory and 21 per cent clear, Maiden Gully YCW Eagles will be wary of Bears Lagoon Serpentine’s fight in Saturday’s ninth round of A-grade netball in the Bendigo Bank Loddon Valley Football Netball League.

The match on the Eagles’ court at Marist College Oval in Maiden Gully is crucial for both clubs.

Win and the Eagles soar eight points clear of the Bears.

A win for the visitors and BL Serpentine is just percentage behind in its pursuit of a top-five berth.

In last Saturday’s play, Inglewood scored a 77-42 win on Inglewood’s court at Searle Bros Oval.

The Bears worked hard, but Newbridge was too strong in a 57-28 victory at Serpentine.

Just two weeks ago, BL Serpentine turned up the heat at Marong to defeat the Panthers by eight goals.

The Bears will be determined to take that level of intensity and skill to Maiden Gully YCW’s court.

In other round nine matches, Calivil United marks a return to Raywood Recreation Reserve when it hosts Inglewood.

The Demons’ run in the past three weeks includes a nine-goal win at Mitiamo, bye, and 30-goal victory at Pyramid Hill’s Mitchell Park.

Inglewood’s breakthrough win, 38-36 at Pyramid Hill in round five, was followed by a bye and then rest for the AFL Victoria Community Championships.

The Blues returned to their court last round, but were outplayed by a skilful Mitiamo line-up.

Mitiamo takes on Marong at John Forbes Oval in Superoos’ territory at Mitiamo.

The hosts should be too strong for a team which has a 2-5 record.

Newbridge plays Pyramid Hill at Bendigo Locksmith Riverside Park.

The Maroons will be eyeing a chance to pour in plenty of goals in a percentage-lifting performance against the winless Pyramid Hill.

Best performances by Pyramid Hill so far were a 46-48 loss at Marong in round four, and then a two-goal to Inglewood at home a week later.

The team in red, white and blue has played some fine quarters, but also been dominated by the opposition in several others.

Bridgewater has the bye.

Standings in the Loddon Valley FNL A-grade netball competition:

Bridgewater 163 per cent, 32 points; Mitiamo 130, 20; Newbridge 120, 20; Calivil United 125, 16; Maiden Gully YCW Eagles 103, 16; Bears Lagoon Serpentine 82, 12; Marong 76, 8; Inglewood 63, 4; Pyramid Hill 67, 0.
