North Bendigo star skippers Heathcote DFNL

by Nathan Dole

NORTH Bendigo’s gun on-baller/midfielder Jarrod Findlay will captain the Bendigo Bank Heathcote District Football Netball League team in Saturday’s clash with Mildura.

Findlay and his HDFNL team-mates face a daunting task of beating Sunraysia at Sarah Oval in Mildura in the Worksafe AFL Victoria Community Championships clash.

Now in his fourth year at North Bendigo, Findlay’s run with the Bulldogs includes a premiership victory in 2016, Sam Cheatley Medal as league best and fairest the following season.

In Mildura, Findlay will team up with former Adelaide Crows and Carlton player Sam Kerridge, now coaching at White Hills; as well as Lockington Bamawm United ruckman Tyler Phillips, and Leitchville Gunbower’s Matt Pollock at the centre clearances and ball-ups.

Injuries have meant Ben Weightman from Mount Pleasant and Mitch Dole from White Hills will not be in the attack.

The Nick Carter-coached HDFNL will look to the marking power of North Bendigo’s Darcy Richards and Elmore’s Romain Grenveille, and the skill and intensity at the contest provided by Jake Allport of White Hills, Elmore’s James Harney, North Bendigo’s Jake Hyland, and Huntly’s Harry Whittle.

Heathcote clubmates Codie Price and Darcy McLean were selected on the wings.

A premiership-winning player with Sandhurst, Price has dominated in his first year at the Heathcote Saints.

Price’s non-stop run and excellent skills are two of his major strengths.

In defence, Bart Phillips from LBU and Pascale Craig from White Hills are in the key positions.

The dash of Leitchville Gunbower’s Brady Hore and North Bendigo’s Aaryn Craig will be a key to rebounding from defence.

On the netball court, Heathcote DFNL has the goaling prowess of Ash Gilmore from White Hills and Huntly’s Ash Jenkyn to capitalise on the work of the defence and mid-court.

The HDFNL is being coached by gun White Hills defender Anna-Grace Close.

The defensive workrate of Bronte Deary has played a big part in the unbeaten run White Hills has achieved.

The coach can also call on White Hills team-mate Rhian Moresi to play in midcourt or goal, while centre Danni Wee Hee has starred in many matches for White Hills.

Leitchville Gunbower’s Bronte Gundry and Emmalea Wishart will be keen to play their part in a HDFNL victory.

Isabel Nichol-Snith from Elmore adds to the squad’s mid-court strength.

The open netball match between Heathcote FNL and Sunraysia FNL starts at 1pm.
