The finals for the AFL Central Victoria Bendigo Mazda Fast5 netball competition were held on Monday night at the QEO.
Wedderburn advanced to the Grand Final after defeating Golden Square to play Sandhurst who also earned a Grand Final berth after defeating Bridgewater in the knock out semi-finals.
In a thriller Sandhurst defeated Wedderburn by 1 goal in the Grand Final, 24 to 23. The first half was tightly contested with Sandhurst leading 7 to 5 at quarter time and 12 to 9 at half time. Sandhurst had their power play in the third quarter, when all goals are worth double, and stretched their lead 20 to 11 at three quarter time with Wedderburn’s power play to come. In the final quarter Wedderburn nailed a four point shot and a six point shot to be within one goal with a minute to play. A frantic final minute saw both teams attempt shots but the score remained with Sandhurst winning by a solitary goal.
Carol Cathcart said, “The final game was a great way to finish the Bendigo Mazda Fast5 series. Both teams played strategically. Wedderburn made the most of their power play, when goals are worth double, scoring 10 points in two shots!! Wedderburn had a final rushed shot to win the game but missed their opportunity. After a successful series AFL Central Victoria will conduct a competition for Football Netball Leagues again in 2017”.
