Golden Square beats ladder-leading Demons
GOLDEN Square took the points against the Winslow White Hills Demons as the top two clashed in Friday night’s start to round 15 in the Champions IGA-backed CVFL under-18 girls footy season.
It was a brilliant start by Golden Square on its turf at Fur Life Oval in Wade Street.
The blue and gold led 23-1 at quarter-time and then scored another goal in the second as the Demons replied with a tally of 1.1.
Quarter three was to be when the Demons made their move.
The red and black scored three goals and held the hosts to a score of 1.1.
At the last change Golden Square led 36-27.
Defences were on top for most of the final term.
Square’s score of 1.2 as it kept the Demons to a behind meant the Bulldogs marked a 44-28 victory.
Ruby Demeo led the blue and gold attack on three goals as captain Ava Barker, Lucy Johansen and Jayda Lockwood added one each.
Matilda Meersbergen capped a fine match for White Hills by kicking three goals as Chelsea Edwards added another.
Best for Golden Square were Ava Barker, Mackenzie Bickley, Gemma McPhee, Ella Gourley, Ruby Demeo and Jayda Lockwood.
Eve Cail, Tahlia Kendall, Kiara Field, Sophie O’Connell, Rowena Stevens and Reagan Wirken were best for White Hill.
The Demons are eight points clear of the second-placed Golden Square at three rounds to go in the home-and-away series.
In Friday night’s other match it was Sandhurst which charged to an 83-15 victory on Eaglehawk’s ground in Canterbury Park.
The Dragons led 25-nil at quarter-time.
Eaglehawk hit back to score two goals in the second which was matched by the maroon and blue.
A score of 3.3 as it kept the Two Blues scoreless in the third put Sandhurst up by eight goals at a quarter to play.
Ellie Bellenger and Charlotte Scanlon kicked three goals each as Leni Brown and Charlotte Liddy booted two majors in an 83-15 result.
Lilly Stevenson kicked both of Eaglehawk’s goals.
Best for Sandhurst were Charlotte Scanlon, Leni Brown, Mia Maxted, Ellie Bellenger, Ryah Mackie and Mia Howarth.
Tahlia Thorpe, Neve Nisbet, Isabelle James, Lilly Stevenson, Jessica Brown and Gracie Whitfort played well for the Hawks.
On Sunday it was Woorinen which stood a final quarter fightback from Castlemaine to win by two goals.
The Woorinen Tigers made the long trek to Castlemaine’s Camp Reserve.
The yellow and black won the first term, 15-7, before both teams added a goal in the second.
Woorinen dominated most of the third quarter to score three unanswered goals as the Magpies added two behinds.
Castlemaine fought on strongly to win the last, 13-nil.
At the final siren Woorinen led 41-29.
Grace Ayars and Erin Johnston led the Tigers’ attack on two goals.
Maddyson Hewson kicked a match-high three goals for the Magpies.
Best for Woorinen were Meg Young, Hollie Everett, Madison Johnston, Lauren Clarke, Macey Vinnicombe and Milla Stewart.
Amelia Britt, Kate Batchelor, Maddyson Hewson, Olivia Muscat, Shelby Kitchingham and Lori Whaley played well for the Magpies.
Strathfieldsaye had the bye.

Round 16 kicks off with Friday night’s match between Sandhurst and Golden Square at Queen Elizabeth Oval from 5.30pm.
On Sunday it will be White Hills against Eaglehawk at the Scott Street ground in White Hills, and Woorinen at home to Strathfieldsaye.
Both matches start at 11.15am.
Castlemaine has the bye.
