GOLDEN Square broke Castlemaine’s winning streak as round four in the Champions IGA-backed CVFL senior women’s footy competition kicked off Friday night.
The Darren Walsh-coached Golden Square marked its first home game at Gourmet Pantry Oval in Wade Street by scoring an eight-point win against the reigning premier.
Castlemaine led 9-1 at quarter-time and 9-2 by the main break.
After a goalless first half, Golden Square drew level by the last change after it scored 2.1 and kept the Magpies to a goal in the third quarter.
A hot run by the Bulldogs kept rolling as they added 2.2 and defended strongly to restrict the Magpies to a goal.
By the final siren Golden Square led 29-21.
The Bulldogs’ attack was led by Taylah Moore on two goals as Kira Gibbson and Lucy Gilbee were also on target.
Castlemaine’s leading goalkicker was Paynton Jolliffe on two as as Breannan Ross added the other.
Best for Golden Square were Ava Barker, Taylah Moore, Carly Geary, Karley Hynes, Kira Gibbons and Lily Mansfield.
Alice D’Arcy, Tiahna Cochrane, Eillish Cumming, Mikaela Trethowan, Chloe Butcher and Georgia Gribble were best for the Jordan Cochrane-coached Castlemaine.
The round was completed on Sunday.
Sandhurst marked a 46-12 win on Eaglehawk’s ground at C & M Oval in Canterbury Park.
Charlotte Scanlon kicked three goals as Ava Franklin added two majors for Sandhurst.
The Hawks’ goalkickers were Anya Cardilini and captain Eliza Long.
Best for Sandhurst were Lily Campbell, Lauren Suleiman, Taylah Klemm, Charlotte Scanlon, Chloe Naughton and Sarah Baldwin.
Lexie Moss, coach Molly Metcalf, Monique Gavriliadis, Caitlin Evans, Lucy El Hage and Eliza Long were Eaglehawk’s best.
The Sandhurst team is coached by Liam Ireland and Andrew Saladino.
Wedge-Tailed Eagles soared to top of the ladder after a 156-nil win against Bendigo Thunder in Sunday’s match at Weeroona Oval in Bendigo.
The Eagles’ attack was led by Emma Williams, five goals; Jorja Bennett and Brooke Cowan, four; and Kareena Jacobsen-Logan, two.
Best for the Phil Hawkes-coached Wedge-Tailed Eagles were Teagan Ainslie, Belinda Hateley, Amber Gajic, Natalie Korinfsky, Brooke Cowan and Taya Barnett.
Hollie Maher, Archie Mclachlan, Stacey Barbagallo, Ruby Bernardo Pineda, Jasmine Alcon and Helen Barclay were best for the Mick McInnes-coached Thunder.
