White Hills rules contest in Eagles’ nest

WHITE Hills capped a brilliant final quarter fightback to defeat Wedge-Tailed Eagles in Sunday’s round six clash in the Champions IGA-backed CVFL senior women’s footy competition.

The White Hills team faced a 14-point deficit at three quarter-time in the Eagles’ nest at Woodend’s Racecourse Reserve.

A fired-up Demons team piled on four goals and kept the Eagles scoreless to clinch a 45-35 victory.

Seisia White booted four goals to earn best-afield honours as Ella Henery, Sasha Pearce and Nadia Peebles were also on target for the red and black.

The Eagles’ goalkickers were Teagan Ainslie, two; Jorja Bennett, Kasey Button and Emma Williams.

Best for White Hills were Seisia White, Kara Kane, Ella Henery, Courtney Collard, Nadia Peebles and Sasha Pearce.

Teagan Ainslie, Demi Henderson, Ayesha Nicholson, Jorja Bennett, Mairead Murphy and Peta Turnbull were best for the Phil Hawkes-coached Eagles.

The Demons’ line-up coached by Sharni Barker and Allara Jackson is third in the premiership race on a four-two record.

Round six kicked off with Friday night’s match between Castlemaine and Sandhurst at The Railway Hotel Oval in Castlemaine’s Camp Reserve.

The Jordan Cochrane-coached Castlemaine welcomed back gun forward Shelby Knoll for just her third match for the Magpies this season.

Knoll had kicked 15 goals in her previous two appearances for Castlemaine.

It was Knoll who proved to be a key factor in Castlemaine beating the Dragons by 27 points.

Just seven points separated the teams who remarkably accurate in the first half.

Castlemaine scored 5.1 in the opening two terms as Sandhurst scored four straight goals.

In the third it was the Magpies who added 3.2 and kept the maroon to a tally of two behinds.

A closely-fought last quarter went Castlemaine’s way, 8-6, on the way to a 59-32 victory.

Knoll finished with six goals as Georgia Gordon kicked two.

Sandhurst’s attack was led by Grace Campbell on three goals.

Best for Castlemaine were Paynton Jolliffe, Tiahna Cochrane, Eillish Cumming, Shelby Knoll, Georgia Gribble and Taylah Sartori.

Grace Campbell, Taylah Klemm, Chloe Taylor, Ruby Campbell, Chloe Naughton and Katrina Alford played well for a Sandhurst team coached by Liam Ireland and Andrew Saladino.

There were big wins for Golden Square and Eaglehawk in their home games played on Mother’s Day.

At Golden Square the blue and gold won 159-nil against Marong on Gourmet Pantry Oval in Wade Street.

Gabby Drage led the attack on seven goals as Carly Geary, Karley Hynes and Makayla Roberts kicked three each.

Best for the Darren Walsh-coached Golden Square were Makayla Roberts, Gabby Drage, Lily Mansfield, Kira Gibbons, Karley Hynes and Bianca Bourke.

Shauna Roy, Danielle Humphrey, Naomi Ridsdale, Hayley Greig and Jess Ballinger were best for the Brett Carter-coached Marong.

Eaglehawk soared to a 161-nil win against Bendigo Thunder at C & M Oval in Eaglehawk’s Canterbury Park.

After scoring 9.17 in the first half, Eaglehawk was far more accurate in the second as it finished on 23.23.

Hawks’ coach Molly Metcalf led the attack on five goals as Grace Edlin and Emily Galtieri added four each.

Other multiple goalkickers for the Borough were Lilly Stevenson, three; Caitlin Evans and Kelly Mensforth, two.

Eaglehawk’s best were Eliza Long, Monique Gavriliadis, Molly Metcalf, Emily Galtieri, Kelly Mensforth and Alannah Leach.

Shasta Martion, Belinda Johnstone, Ngaire Harlan, Hollie Maher, Stacey Barbagallo and Sarah Lean were best for the Mick McInnes-coached Thunder.

Woorinen and Storm kept their unbeaten rolling in round three action in the Champions IGA-backed CVFL under-18 girls footy competition.

The Woorinen line-up scored a 14-goal win on Eaglehawk’s turf at C & M Oval in Canterbury Park on Mother’s Day.

The Tigers won 91-7 as Prue O’Sullivan kicked four goals and Lana Brooks booted three.

Zoe Hodgskiss was on target for Eaglehawk.

Best for the Tigers were Prue O’Sullivan, Mayla Conway, Chloe Lovell, Tyler Arnett, Erin Johnston and Lola Patterson.

Kyah Spiteri, Rima Shanley, Imogen Brown, Alexandra Jones, Maggie Pollock and Jessica Brown were Eaglehawk’s best.

Closest match on Sunday was at Triple M Park in Strathfieldsaye’s Tannery Lane where Storm fought on for a 39-34 win against Echuca United.

The Eagles led 9-7 at quarter-time before it was 15-all at the long break.

Storm won the third quarter, 14-13, and the last, 10-6.

Kirra Molly kicked two goals for Storm as Rebel Connors, Akiva Morrissey and Jasmin Wood were also on target.

Goalkickers for Echuca United were Jade Dennis and Ava Plattfuss on two each, and Lily Dunham.

Storm’s best were Scarlett Ward, Forest Jackson-Leahy, Molly Manton, Chella Fitzgerald, Marlie Skinner and Akiva Morrissey.

Lily Dunham, Ruby Morgan, Jada Dennis, Indi Herrett, Willow Clark and Mia Siede starred for Echuca United.

Another closely-fought match on Sunday was at Castlemaine’s Camp Reserve where the Magpies held on to beat Sandhurst by 10 points.

The Magpies led 50-26 going into the final term.

Sandhurst’s play lifted dramatically and was rewarded with 3.2 as the Pies added a goal.

At the final siren Castlemaine led 56-46.

Ava Bartlett booted three goals for the Magpies as Rhani Evans and Lilly Hartmann added two each.

Sandhurst’s attack was led by Evie Gretgrix, Ryah Mackie and Macey Pinner on two each.

Best for the Magpies were Amelia Brown, Ava Bartlett, Isobelle Pratt, Rhani Evans, Freya Readsmith and Piper Marshall.

Evie Gretgrix, Macey Pinner, Ryah Mackie, Ellie Bellenger, Charlotte Comer and Moanarose Moefaauo played well for the maroon and blue.

Marong won its match on Golden Square’s turf at Gourmet Pantry Oval in Wade Street by 62 points.

The Panthers led 30-7 at half-time and won the next two quarters, 15-6 and 36-6, on the way to an 81-19 result.

The Panthers’ attack was led by Tianna Shay on three goals as Molly Austin, Allie Grant and Alyssa Wardell slotted two each.

Ruby Demeo booted two goals for Golden Square.

Best for Marong were Alyssa Wardell, Phoebe England, Allie Grant, El Taylor and Molly Austin.

Sihanna Carter, Lucy Johansen, Evelyn Williams, Skylar Hickman, Ruby Demeo and Alyssa Brew were Golden Square’s best.

White Hills scored a 51-29 win against Kangaroo Flat on the Roos’ turf at Bendigo Mazda Oval in Dowr Park.

The Demons led 30-27 at three quarter-time and then added three unanswered goals in the final term.

Jayda Alford, Mikayla Gladman and Adele McNaughton kicked two goals each for the Demons.

Matilda Rose booted a match-high three goals for the Kangaroos.

Best for White Hills were Reagan Wirken, Evie Riordan, Layla O’Brien, Maci Gough, Lucy Newton and Maleah Alford.

Tarlie Davis, Felicia Buovac, Matilda Rose, Indigo Brown, Abigail Sendy and Ava Ahearn were Kangaroo Flat’s best.
