Magpies soar to victory in Eaglehawk

CASTLEMAINE scored a 35-point win at Eaglehawk in Friday night’s start to Pride Round in the Champions IGA-backed CVFL senior women’s footy competition.

The Magpies swooped on Eaglehawk’s turf at C & M Oval in Canterbury Park as the league marked the halfway point of the home-and-away series.

A closely-fought quarter was won by Castlemaine, 15-9.

The Magpies added 3.1 as the Hawks scored two goals in the second term.

As the Jordan Cochrane-coached Castlemaine worked to keep Eaglehawk goalless in the second half it added 4.2.

By the final siren the Magpies were up 60-25.

Castlemaine captain Tiahna Cochrane kicked five goals as Jemma Finning added two.

Best for Castlemaine were Tiahna Cochrane, Jemma Finning, Alice D’Arcy, Eillish Cumming, Taylah Sartori and Georgia Gordon.

Eaglehawk coach Molly Metcalf was best along with Emily Galtieri, Lucy El Hage, Monique Gavriliadis, Shelby Faulkner and Jessica Jackson.

Three matches were played on Sunday.

Bendigo Thunder scored its second win of the season.

The Mick McInnes-coached Thunder kept Marong to a goal in a 51-6 result at Weeroona Oval in Bendigo.

Thunder’s best were Jasmine Alcon, Ngaire Harlan, Shasta Martion, Morgan O’Neil, Breanna Quinton and Hollie Maher.

Tidimalo Khalo, Alicia Turner, Chelby Clark and Alex Purdy were best for the Brett Carter-coached Marong.

Sandhurst dominated its clash with Wedge-Tailed Eagles at Woodend’s Racecourse Reserve to win by 87 points.

The Dragons charged to a 31-1 lead by quarter-time and did not let up as it scored 20, 11 and 27 points in the next three terms.

Grace Campbell led Sandhurst’s attack on five goals as Samantha Johnston and Charlotte Scanlon slotted two each.

Best for the maroon and blue were Grace Campbell, Chloe Taylor, Charlotte Scanlon, Lily Campbell, Phoebe Cuttriss and Ruby Campbell.

The Sandhurst team is coached by Andrew Saladino and Liam Ireland.

Best for the Wedge-Tailed Eagles were Mairead Murphy, Teagan Ainslie, Demi Henderson, Ayesha Nicholson, Aisha Mansfield and Hannah Gajic.

The Eagles are coached by Phil Hawkes.

Golden Square kicked 24 goals in a big win on its turf against White Hills at Gourmet Pantry Oval in Wade Street.

The Darren Walsh-coached ladder-leaders slammed on nine goals in the first, six in the second, five in the third, and four in the last.

By the final siren the blue and gold led 160-6.

Kira Gibbons was in superb touch as she kicked eight goals and Gabby Drage added six.

The Bulldogs also had Ruby Demeo, Kate Douglass and Carly Geary kick two each.

Ella Henery was on target for the Demons.

Best for Golden Square were Kira Gibbons, Taylah Moore, Mackenzie Bickley, Gabby Drage, Ava Barker and Gemma Roberts.

Sasha Pearce, Chelsea and Acacia Edwards, Ella Henery, Kara Kane and Courtney Collard were best for a Demons’ team coached by Sharni Barker and Allara Jackson.

The season resumes on Friday, June 12 when Sandhurst and Castlemaine play under the lights at Queen Elizabeth Oval from 7.30pm.

Three matches on Sunday, June 14 will start at 1pm.

Round six in the Champions IGA-backed CVFL under-18 girls was played across the weekend.

First-up was Eaglehawk against Castlemaine on Friday night at C & M Oval in Eaglehawk’s Canterbury Park.

The Hawks were up 15-1 at half-time and then won the second half, 20-12.

Sezin Lees led the Two Blues’ attack on two goals.

Best for Eaglehawk were Imogen Brown, Sezin Lees, Macey Scoble, Bethany Pollock, Alexandra Jones and Tahlia Thorpe.

Castlemaine’s best were Amelia Brown, Ava Bartlett, Kate Batchelor, Rhani Evans, Piper Marshall and Shelby Kitchingham.

Game two on Friday night was Sandhurst against Echuca United at Ewing Park in Bendigo.

The Sandhurst line-up won 81-28.

Etta Place led the attack on three goals as captain Ellie Bellenger kicked two goals.

Best for the maroon and blue were Ruby Kelly, Georgia Bray, April Wainwright, Evie Gretgrix, Etta Place and Mekayla Reid.

Echuca United’s best were Zarlia Jenkins, Matilda Fowler, Ruby Morgan, Lily Dunham, Julia Taranto and Charlie Martin.

On Sunday it was White Hills which fought for an 11-point win on Golden Square’s ground at Gourmet Pantry Oval in Wade Street.

The Demons raced to a 20-6 lead at quarter-time and were up 34-7 by the long break.

Golden Square hit back to win the last half.

The blue and gold scored two goals in the third as White Hills added 1.3.

The Bulldogs then won the last, 13-nil, but it was the red and black which marked a 43-32 victory.

Maddison Collard led the White Hills attack on three goals.

Leading goalkicker for Golden Square was Lucy Johansen on two.

Louise Khodja, Ella Treacy, Ella Watkins, Layla O’Brien and Matilda Smith were best for the Demons.

Golden Square’s best were Jayde Chappel, Lucy Johansen, Skylar Hickman, Laylah Walsh and Poppy Eaton.

At Triple M Park in Strathfieldsaye it was Storm which surged to a 57-10 win against Marong.

Storm led 23-nil at quarter-time and 38-2 by the long break.

It was much closer second half which went Storm’s way, 19-7.

Storm captain Scarlett Ward kicked three goals in the 57-10 victory.

Phoebe England was on target for Marong.

Best for Storm were Scarlett Ward, Chella Fitzgerald, Rebel Connors, Isabella Stevens, Jorja Cunningham and Iris Huddleston.

The Panthers’ best were El Taylor, Mia Berryman, Allie Grant, Phoebe England, Alana Dawson and Tianna Shay.

Kangaroo Flat forfeited its match to Woorinen which was to have been played at Bendigo Mazda Oval in Kangaroo Flat’s Dower Park.
