MACORNA celebrated one its best victories in many footy seasons in Saturday’s play to complete round nine in Bendigo Bank Loddon Valley FNL senior footy.
The Macorna Tigers fought on for a 93-90 victory on home turf against Bridgewater.
It was a superb contest between the team in yellow and black and the Mean Machine.
Macorna led 37-33 at quarter-time and 62-57 by the long break.
Quarter three was dominated by the Tigers.
The Fergus Payne-coached Macorna kicked 4.4 and kept Bridgewater to a tally of 1.5.
Tigers’ fans were on edge in the final quarter as Bridgewater sliced into a 22-point deficit.
The Mean Machine scored 3.4, but Macorna’s tally of three behinds was enough to clinch a 93-90 victory.
Dimitri Fasoulis led the Tigers’ attack on four goals as Seb Ehharter and Broden Wishart kicked three each and Will Meharry added two.
Bridgewater coach Lachie Sharp kicked seven goals as Darcy Wood added three.
Best for Macorna were Matt Colak, Kieran Foley, Seb Erharter, Broden Wishart, Tom Ebbage and Will Meharry.
A list of Bridgewater’s best was not supplied.
Four goals by gun recruit Shaun McKernan was a highlight of the Maiden Gully YCW Eagles win at Calivil United.
McKernan has added 91 games of AFL experience across stints with Adelaide, Essendon and St Kilda to the Eagles’ line-up.
A key instigator in his more to Maiden Gully YCW was Eagles’ playing co-coach and former Essendon and Port Adelaide mid/forward Angus Monfries.
It was Heritage Day for Calivil United which wore the maroon and gold guernseys as a tribute to Northern United in a match for the George Thompson Trophy and the Kevin Demeo Medal for best player.
The Eagles made a great start to Saturday’s clash in Calivil to be up 29-6 by quarter-time.
Six goals to one in the second term gave Maiden Gully YCW a 50-point buffer rolling into the final hour.
Calivil United fought back to win the third term, 32-16.
The last went the way of the Shawn Filo and Angus Monfries-coached Eagles, 22-6.
At the final siren the Eagles led 104-54.
The Eagles’ attack was led by Shaun McKernan on four goals as Luke Gray kicked three and Jaidyn Berry, Lincoln Hancock and Lewis Pigdon added two each.
Henry McCarthy kicked two majors for the Sam Maher-coached Demons.
Best for Maiden Gully YCW Eagles were Mitch Hill, Isaac Neretlis, Luke Gray, Lewis Pigdon, Daniel Russell and Zac Turner.
Calivil United’s best were Josh Connolly, Jayden Manderson, Rhys Lourie, Tyler Rasmussen, Liam Stephens and Riley Walsh.
Defences were well on top in the Newbridge and Pyramid Hill match at Deepcore Drilling Oval in Newbridge’s Riverside Park.
The Jayden Cordy-coached Newbridge made a great start to lead 19-8 at quarter-time.
From there it was Pyramid Hill which seized control.
The Bulldogs won the second term, 28-1, and the third, 16-1.
Newbridge fought on to win the last quarter, 8-7, but it was Pyramid Hill which achieved a 59-29 victory.
Multiple goalkickers for the Bulldogs were Mitch Dingwall and Jhye Baddeley-Kelly on three and two.
Pyramid Hill’s best were Mitch Jorgensen, Jhye Baddeley-Kelly, Ben Knight, Mitch Dingwall, James Sala and Gavin James.
The Jarrod Fitzpatrick-coached Bulldogs are second on an eight-one record.
Best for Newbridge were Dylan Lloyd, Jon Coe, James Blood, Jackson Eadon, Kobe Friswell and Zaiyden Richards.
Newbridge adds dual Brownlow medallist Gary Ablett Jr to the line-up for next Saturday’s clash with Brdigewater at Deepcore Drilling Oval.
In a brilliant career of 357 matches in stints with Geelong and Gold Coast, Ablett played in premiership teams with the Cats in 2007 and ’09.
He earnt selection in the All-Australian Team on eight occasions and was a five-time winner of the Leigh Matthews trophy.
Ablett Jr was among the latest inductees to the AFL Hall of Fame.
The Bridgewater team includes pacy mid/forward Gary Rohan who played for Sydney and Geelong as part of the Carlton Draft.
Premier of the past four seasons, Marong is back on top of the ladder following a 43-point win at Mitiamo’s John Forbes Oval.
The James Flaherty-coached Marong led 34-13 at quarter-time and 66-39 by the long break.
Although it scored just the one goal in the second half, Mitiamo worked hard to hold the Panthers to a tally of three goals.
Marong led 91-48 at the final siren.
A superb match by Michael Bradbury was capped with seven goals as Shaun Knott kicked four.
Mitiamo’s leading goalkicker was Zach Morrison with two.
Best for the Panthers were ruckman/forward Michael Bradbury, Shaun Knott, David Johnstone, Matt Willox, Jimmy Gadsden and Jai Gretgrix.
Mitiamo coach Luke Lougoon was the Superoos’ best along with Zac Cruse, Jayden Matthews, Kobe Salvin, Seth Wright and Joey Mizzi.
Round nine began on June 6 where Inglewood beat Bears Lagoon-Serpentine by seven goals.
It was a stand-alone match at Centre State Scaffolding Oval as Inglewood celebrated its 150th anniversary.

In the netball…….PYRAMID Hill has grabbed a top-three berth in the A-grade netball standings after Saturday’s play to complete the split ninth round the Bendigo Bank Loddon Valley FNL season.
The Pyramid Hill line-up won a high-scoring contest on Newbridge’s court at Deepcore Drilling Oval by six goals.
A top match between the Maroons and Bulldogs went Pyramid Hill’s way, 48-42.
Runner-up last September, Pyramid Hill is on a six-three record and dislodged Newbridge from the third rung on the ladder.
After starting the season with a four-goal loss at Inglewood, Pyramid Hill has struck back brilliantly.
Defeats for the team coached by Chelsea Emmerson, Amber Dingwall and Darci Tierney have been to Inglewood, 48-44; Marong, 54-50; and Mitiamo, 69-51.
The Bulldogs will be back on their court at Mitchell Park for next Saturday’s showdown with the fifth-placed Inglewood at 3pm.
A Newbridge team coached by Hayley Martiniello will be back at Deepcore Drilling Oval to take on Bridgewater from 2.30pm.
Unbeaten in its pursuit of a premiership hat-trick, Mitiamo dominated the round nine clash on Marong’s court at Jackal Oval in Malone Park.
The Jen Wilson-coached Superoos again passed the 60-goal mark against the Panthers.
A Marong team coached by Bridget Willox and Bianca Garton makes its way to Gadsden Finance Serpentine Reserve next Saturday.
Calivil United marked its fourth win of the season when it played Maiden Gully YCW Eagles in the Demons’ den at Calivil Recreation Reserve.
As the Demons poured in 62 goals a strong defensive effort kept the Eagles to a tally of 35.
The Annie Blow and Alex Ingram-coached Calivil United will be back home next Saturday to play Mitiamo from 3pm.
An Eagles’ team coached by Christie Griffiths treks across to Macorna for a 3pm showdown with the Tigers.
Macorna took on Bridgewater in last Saturday’s play.
In its first season in the Loddon Valley the Brooke Allison-coached Macorna has battled to keep pace with strong teams such as Mitiamo, Bridgewater and Pyramid Hill.
On Saturday it was the Bridgewater line-up which netted a 53-19 win against the yellow and black.
The Carly Wild and Lou Dupuy-coached Bridgewater makes its way to Newbridge for a big clash in the 10th round.
In the season opener it was Newbridge which fought on for a 42-40 victory on Bridgewater’s court.
Week one of the split ninth round featured the June 6 match between Inglewood and Bears Lagoon-Serpentine.
It was a 57-42 win for the Dani O’Toole-coached Inglewood as the club celebrated its 150th anniversary at Centre State Scaffolding Oval.
Fourth in the premiership race, Inglewood heads to Pyramid Hill next Saturday.
The Erin Varker-coached Bears are at home to take on Marong Panthers.
