Macorna stays in race for A-grade premiership

MACORNA stayed in the race for the A-grade netball premiership as it beat Ultima in Saturday’s start to the Elders-backed finals series in the Golden Rivers Football Netball League.

The Tigers took on Ultima at Hay.

Ultima led 7-5 at quarter-time, but Macorna lifted to win the second term, 13-7.

It was the third quarter where the Tigers took charge as they scored 10 goals and held Ultima to just two.

Both line-ups scored 10 goals in the final term as Macorna marked a 38-26 victory.

Macorna’s attack was led by Emmalea Wishart on 22 goals and Brielle O’Meara on 16.

Goalscorers for Ultima were Grace Farrell, 16; and Jenna Jenkins, 10.

In the VHM Limited-backed B-grade, Moulamein beat Quambatook by seven goals.

 

After being 13-all at half-time, Moulamein won the third quarter, 11-6, and the last, 10-8, to claim a 37-27 victory.

Goalscorers for Moulamein were Penny Munro, 23; Rhiann O’Meara, 8; and Megan Starick, 3.

Quambatook’s attack was led by Amber Steicke, 23; Georgia Andrew-Mills, 3; and Emily Sinclair, 1.

It was a goal difference at the end of the B-reserve match between Hay and Wandella.

The Hay line-up led 17-16 at half-time and 26-21 at a quarter to go.

 

Wandella upped the pressure in the last to score 13 goals, but Hay’s tally of nine was enough to clinch a 35-34 victory.

The Hay attack was led by Trish Jamieson, 26; and Leonnie Laracy, 9.

Goalscorers for Wandella were Keona Treacy, 23; and Jorjia Robinson, 11.

It was a closely-fought contest between Wandella and Macorna in the VHM Limited 17-and-under competition.

Macorna led 11-9 at quarter-time and 21-18 by the main break.

A six-goal lead at three quarter-time for Macorna was cut to two by the final whistle as Macorna won the match, 37-35.

 

In the 14-and-under match, Hay led 10-9 at quarter-time of the clash with Macorna.

By half-time it was a 21-15 lead Hay’s way.

Although it faced a 10-goal deficit at three quarter-time, Macorna played brilliant netball in the last to win the term, 13-2, and the match, 34-33.

Second semi-finals will be played this Saturday at Quambatook.

 

It’s Murrabit against Nullawil in A-grade, B-grade and B-reserve.

Ultima faces Nullawil in the 17-and-under match.

First match of the day is the under-14s between Nullawil and Ultima.

Preliminary finals will be played on September 3 at Wandella.

Grand final day is set down for September 10 at Nullawil.
