Big wins for Bulldogs, Dragons, Hawks

THERE were big margins for Golden Square, Sandhurst and Eaglehawk in the weekend’s seventh round of the Champions IGA-backed CVFL senior women’s footy competition.

Play kicked off under Friday night lights when Golden Square took on North Bendigo at Golden Square’s Wade Street Oval.

Golden Square charged to a 28-nil lead by quarter-time and then added 6.4 to nil in the second.

After a scoreless third term by both teams it was Square which kicked 3.3 in the last to complet an 89-nil victory.

The in-form Gabby Drage and captain Liz Watkins both kicked three goals for the blue and gold.

Best for Golden Square were Holly Smith, Tania Kerrison, Gemma Free, Lauren Suleiman, Molly Forde and Mackenzie Bickley.

Roweena Ilsley, Quetta Holloway-Jinks, Marguerita Murphy, Nicole Brannan, Samantha Hunter and Mia Bolitho-Williams worked hard for a North Bendigo team coached by Jaydene Burzacott and Zak Carter.

On Sunday it was Sandhurst which marked a 102-1 win against the Winslow Constructors White Hills Demons at Queen Elizabeth Oval.

The Dragons powered to a 34-nil lead by quarter-time.

Highlight for the maroon and blue was the third term in which it scored 5.9.

Sandhurst captain Ruby Campbell led the attack on four goals as Scout Carmody and vice-captain Chelsea Reeves kicked three majors.

Best for the Dragons were Ruby Campbell, Arkie Donnelly, Scout Carmody, Sophie Wight, Chloe Swatton and Katie Walker.

This season it’s Andrew Saladino and Liam Ireland who have teamed up to coach Sandhurst.

Best for the Phil Murley-coached White Hills were Nadia Peebles, Tahlia Kendall, Sharni Barker, Catherine Fry, Gabby Speirs and Julia Greenhalf.

Eaglehawk scored 29 goals in a 192-6 win against Bendigo Thunder at Canterbury Park.

The Molly Metcalf-coached Eaglehawk scored 9.4 in the first term and then added 8.5 as Thunder’s Kate Wright was on target in the second.

Inspired by a 10-goal haul by Kelly Mensforth the Two Blues also had Grace Edlin, four goals; Emily Galtieri and Lexie Moss, three, cap off their team’s dominance.

Other multiple goalkickers for the Borough were Lucy El Hage, Lily Jenkins and Olivia Murley on two.

Eaglehawk’s best were Kelly Mensforth, Shanae Sawyer, Emily Galtieri, Molly Metcalf, Olivia Murley and Grace Edlin.

Sharlene Cole, Katherine Christie, Stacey Barbagallo, Alannah Leach, Estella Murphy and Hollie Maher played well for the Mick McInnes-coached Thunder.

Castlemaine and Marong had the bye.

It’s a rest for clubs next week as round eight will be played on May 30 and June 1.

The round kicks off with the night match between Eaglehawk and Sandhurst on May 30 from 7.15pm at Canterbury Park in Eaglehawk.

Matches on June 1 will start at 1pm.

The Winslow Constructors White Hills Demons against Bendigo Thunder at Scott Street in White Hills, and North Bendigo on home turf at Bendigo Club Oval in Atkins Street against Marong.

Match of the round will be first against second and the rematch of the ’24 grand finalists as Golden Square tackles Castlemaine at the Wade Street ground in Golden Square from 1pm.

A 30-all draw between Sandhurst and the Winslow Constructors White Hills Demons featured in Sunday’s completion to the fourth round of the Champions IGA-backed CVFL under-18 girls footy season.

The Dragons and Demons met at Queen Elizabeth Oval.

Sandhurst led 29-14 at half-time, but it was White Hills which dominated most of the second half.

As the Demons fired up to score 2.4 they kept the maroon and blue to a point in the last two quarters of the contest.

Mia Maxted kicked three goals for Sandhurst.

Demons’ captain Ella Henery led her team’s attack on two goals.

Best for Sandhurst were Myah Humprhey, Mia Maxted, Phoebe Henderson, Kyah Spiteri, Tully Place and Leni Brown.

Maci Gough, Matilda Meersbergen, Jayda Alford, Ella Henery, Madisyn Morrison and Sophie O’Connell led the way for the Demons.

The round kicked off Friday night at Eaglehawk’s Canterbury Park where Strathfieldsaye Storm marked its first win of the season.

Strathfieldsaye Storm surged to a 26-10 lead by half-time and won the crucial third quarter, 13-6.

Although the Hawks scored a goal in the last it was Storm which celebrated a 41-22 victory.

Goalkickers for Strathfieldsaye were Jorja Cunningham on three, and Lara Cockerall, Akiva Morrissey and Scarlett Ward.

The Hawks’ goalkickers were Zoe Hodgskiss on two and Emily Harvey.

Storm’s best were Scarlett Ward, Akiva Morrissey, Jorja Cunningham, Ruby Manton, Lara Cockerall and Jasmin Wood.

Jessica Brown, Tia Anderson, Darcy Martin, Zoe Hodgskiss, Mary Fisher and Sezin Lees played well for Eaglehawk.

Details from the Golden Square and Kangaroo Flat match at Golden Square’s Wade Street ground were not supplied.

Woorinen had the bye.

It’s a break for teams next weekend as round eight  kicks off Friday, May 30 when Eaglehawk faces Sandhurst from 5.30pm at Eaglehawk’s Canterbury Park.

There will be two matches on June 1 from 11.15am.

Woorinen takes on Kangaroo Flat in the clash of the Tigers and Kangaroos at Woorinen Recreation Reserve.

Strathfieldsaye faces Winslow Constructors White Hills Demons at Triple M Park in Strathfieldsaye’s Tannery Lane.
