Marong charges to first victory

THE Marong Panthers charged to their first victory in the Champions IGA-backed CVFL senior women’s footy league on Sunday.

A Marong team jointly coached by David Blume and Jimmy Evenden faced the Winslow White Hills Demons at White Hills in the round 10 contest.

A closely-fought first quarter ended with Marong in front, six-nil.

In the second it was the Panthers who seized control to score 4.2 as Kara Kane was on target for the Demons.

After some big defeats in its debut season, Marong’s confidence soared throughout the second half at White Hills.

The Panthers added 6.8 and kept the Demons scoreless to complete a 76-6 victory.

Marong captain Dani Jeffery kicked four goals in a best afield performance.

Emily Campbell-Smith chipped in with two goals for the Panthers as Cody Clark, vice-captain Hannah Cue and Alex Purdy were also on target.

Best in Marong’s historic victory were Dani Jeffery, Katrina Alford, Cody Clark, Emily Campbell-Smith, Bianca Bourke and Steph Dawson.

The best players for the Phil Murley-coached White Hills were Rosie Davies, Trudie Newton, Kara Kane, Katie Wilkinson, Olivia Basile and Tilly McQuie.

Eaglehawk’s winning run rolled on a after a 23-19 victory on Bendigo Thunder’s ground at Weeroona Oval.

The Molly Metcalf and Geoff West-coached Eaglehawk led 15-nil at quarter-time.

In the second it was the Mick McInnes-coached Thunder which struck back to score 2.1 as the Hawks added four behinds.

Defences were on top in a goalless second half for both teams.

The Hawks tally of four behinds as Thunder added six was enough to clinch a 23-19 victory.

Goalkickers for Eaglehawk were Lexie Moss and Molly Pianta.

Jaime Sawers goaled for Thunder, but the other goalkicker was not listed.

Best for Eaglehawk were Lexie Moss, Shelby Faulkner, Krystal Robinson, Emily Field, Molly Metcalf and Caitlin Evans.

Emily Galtieri, Lucy El Hage, Emily Button, Acacia Edwards and Ruby Kelly played well for Bendigo Thunder.

Castlemaine marked a 79-point win on its turf at Camp Reserve against Sandhurst.

The result was a marked improvement by the Dragons after the reigning premier beat them by 117 points in the season’s first round at Ewing Park.

In Sunday’s meeting the Andrew Saladino-coached Sandhurst worked hard to keep the Magpies to a goal in the opening term.

A four-point lead at the start of the second quarter was 36 by the end after the Jordan Cochrane-coached Castlemaine scored 5.2 and kept the visitors scoreless.

The play of Jemma Finning, Rachael Stubbings and Beppina Marshall was a key factor as the Magpies kicked away for an 82-3 victory.

Castlemaine’s attack was led by Tiffany Bradley and Brianna Burt on four goals each as Tiahna Cochrane, Georgia Gribble, Rebekah Forrest and Rachael Stubbings were also on target.

Best for the Pies included Brianna Burt, Abbey Bertram and Bronte Ashworth.

Lily Campbell, Amanda Carrod, Ruby Campbell, Katie Walker, Chloe Naughton and Lucy Harrison worked hard for the maroon and blue.

Woorinen marked a big win at home against North Bendigo.

The Katelyn Hazlett-coached Tigers scored 24.20 and kept the visitors scoreless.

A list of Woorinen’s goalkickers and best for both teams was not supplied.

Golden Square had the bye.

Round 11 will be played next Sunday.

All four matches start at 1pm.

Golden Square will be on home turf at Fur Life Oval in Wade Street to play Eaglehawk.

Sandhurst and Marong clash at Queen Elizabeth Oval.

Bendigo Thunder takes on North Bendigo at Weeroona Oval in Napier Street.

Woorinen will be at home to meet Castlemaine in the rematch of last season’s grand finalists.

The Winslow White Hills Demons have the bye.
