Sandhurst dominates clash with Thunder

SANDHURST dominated Sunday’s clash with Bendigo Thunder as the Champions IGA-backed CVFL senior women’s footy competition marked its 15th round.

Aiming to qualify for finals in its first season, Sandhurst kept hopes alive in a 144-2 result on Thunder’s turf at Weeroona Oval in Napier Street.

The Andrew Saladino-coached Sandhurst raced to a 43-1 lead by quarter-time.

From there the maroon and blue were able to score five goals in all of the next three terms.

Madeline Sexton capped a superb match with six goals as the in-form Amanda Carrod added four.

Captain Ruby Campbell and Cheslea Reeves chipped in with three goals as Lily Campbell and Maddy White added two.

Best for Sandhurst were Madeline Sexton, Piper Dunlop, Amanda Carrod, Maddy White, Katie Walker and Chloe Taylor.

Marguerita Murphy, Alannah Leach, Faith Reid, Tracey Anderson, Shasta Martion and Emily Galtieri were best for the Mick McInnes-coached Thunder.

Round 15 kicked off with Friday night’s matches in Golden Square and North Bendigo.

The second-placed Golden Square won its turf at Fur Life Oval in Wade Street against the Winslow White Hills Demons.

After scoring six goals to nil in the opening term, Golden Square added eight majors in the second and another eight in the third.

The Nathan Manuel-coached Golden Square did not allow its intensity or run to drop away.

The blue and gold slammed on 10 goals in the last to complete a 216-nil victory.

Skilful forward Paynton Jolliffe kicked 13 goals as captain Liz Watkins and Courtney Hingston added four each.

The Bulldogs also had Gemma Free, Carly Geary, Tania Kerrison, Saran Mannes and Taylah Moore add two each.

Best for Golden Square were Gemma Free, Carly Geary, Tallulah Duffy, Molly Forde and Courtney Hingston.

Courtney Gibson, Kadeisha Smith, Hannah Ripper, Oakley Turner and Rosie Davies played well for the Phil Murley-coached Demons.

Details on the North Bendigo and Castlemaine match were not supplied.

On Sunday it was Marong against Eaglehawk in the Panthers’ den at East West Oval in Marong’s Malone Park.

The Panthers played well to score a goal in the first quarter through captain Dani Jeffery.

After leading 12-6 at the first break, Eaglehawk then took charge.

The Hawks scored 4.9 in the second and 4.2 in the third as Marong was held to a behind across two quarters.

Another four goals in the last completed a 93-7 victory for Eaglehawk.

Eliza Long kicked three goals in a best afield performance as Shelby Faulkner and Lilly Stevenson kicked two majors.

Best for the Molly Metcalf and Geoff West-coached team from the Borough were Eliza Long, Abbey Free, Emily Field, Shelby Faulkner, Molly Metcalf and Rhian Hobbs.

Bianca Bourke, Dani Jeffery, Regeena Torney, Alex Campbell-Smith, Brooke Young and Katrina Alford played well for the David Blume and Jimmy Evenden-coached Panthers.

Woorinen had the bye.

The 16th round kicks off with Friday night’s match between Sandhurst and Golden Square from 7.15pm at Queen Elizabeth Oval.

North Bendigo and Marong take to Bendigo Club Oval in North Bendigo’s Atkins Street at 5pm on Sunday.

The round will be completed with two matches on Sunday which will start at 1pm.

Winslow White Hills Demons face Eaglehawk at Winslow Constructors Oval in Scott Street, White Hills.

Woorinen will be on home turf to tackle Bendigo Thunder.

Castlemaine has the bye.
