Sandhurst brings heat to contest with Square

SANDHURST will turn up the heat when it takes on Golden Square in Friday night’s start to the 16th round of the Champions IGA-backed CVFL senior women’s footy competition.

The clash between the Dragons and Bulldogs will be played from 7.15pm at Queen Elizabeth Oval in Bendigo.

At three rounds to go in the home-and-away series, Sandhurst is fifth.

The Andrew Saladino-coached Sandhurst starts the weekend locked on 32 points with Woorinen, but 15 per cent cent adrift of the Tigers.

Beat the second-placed Golden Square and Sandhurst has a great chance to qualify for finals in its first season in CVFL action.

Taking the points against the second-placed Golden Square will not be easy.

When these teams met in round seven it was the Nathan Manuel-coached Golden Square which marked a 69-point victory against the maroon and blue at Fur Life Oval in Wade Street.

The Dragons and Bulldogs marked big wins last weekend.

Sandhurst beat Bendigo Thunder by 142 points at Weeroona Oval, while Golden Square won Friday’s home game against White Hills by 216 points.

Key players for Sandhurst include Amanda Carrod at full-forward, Piper Dunlop in the ruck, Imogen Douglass on a wing, Madeline Sexton, and Chelsea Reeves at centre half-forward.

The maroon and blue also has Maddy White to rove the contests, captain Ruby Campbell in the centre, , and Chloe Taylor and Chloe Swatton in defence.

An in-form team from Golden Square includes brilliant forward Paynton Jolliffe, Carly Geary in the ruck, Kate Douglass, Molly Forde and captain Liz Watkins in attack.

Other players to watch for the blue and gold include Molly Forde, Sarah Mannes, Terina Pickering and Tanya Walsh.

On Saturday it will be North Bendigo against Marong from 5pm at Bendigo Club Oval in North Bendigo’s Atkins Street.

It’s a big day for North Bendigo as the 1974 seniors and reserves premiership teams from Golden City Football League days mark the 50-year reunion.

On-field the Bulldogs and Cats meet as North Bendigo tackles Lockington Bamawm United in round 17 of the Bendigo Bank Heathcote DFNL season.

In CVFL action, North Bendigo and Marong are locked on four points.

The Ross Eagleton-coached Bulldogs are more than four per cent clear of the Panthers.

When these teams met in round seven it was North Bendigo which marked a 52-nil win at home against Marong.

Alisha Lourie kicked two goals as Maddie Jelbart, Kira Gibbons, Ajay Turner and Ella Dobell were best.

In last weekend’s play, North Bendigo faced the unbeaten Castlemaine under lights at Bendigo Club Oval.

Marong took on Eaglehawk at East West Oval in Marong’s Malone Park.

The Hawks won 93-7 as Bianca Bourke, Dani Jeffery, Regeena Torney and Alex Campbell-Smith were best for the Panthers.

Two matches will be played on Sunday to complete the 16th round in the CVFL senior women’s season.

Woorinen will be on home turf to take on Bendigo Thunder from 1pm.

The Katelyn Hazlett-coached Woorinen had the bye last round.

An eight-five record has Woorinen in fourth place.

In round seven the Tigers fought on for a 50-31 win on Thunder’s turf at Weeroona Oval.

Key players in the yellow and black include Jenna Bannam, captain Tenay Fellows, Sheridan Gallagher, Samantha Johnston, Brydi Lewis and Jemma Meehan.

Bendigo Thunder will be determined to bounce back after a big loss to Sandhurst.

The Mick McInnes-coached Thunder scored just two points against the maroon and blue.

Thunder’s charge will be led by Tracey Anderson, Emily Galtieri, Marguerita Murphy and Faith Reid.

Thunder’s team bound for the trip to Woorinen includes Nikeah Anderson, Laura Stilo, Liza Jane Edwards, Hannah Perry and Lucy El Hage.

The Winslow White Hills Demons will be on their turf in Scott Street to play Eaglehawk from 1pm.

Tough test for the Phil Murley-coached White Hills against an opponent which marked a 25-goal win against the red and black in round seven.

Was a tough night for White Hills under the lights at Fur Life Oval in Golden Square last Friday.

Best for the Demons in that match included Rosie Davies, Courtney Gibson, Hannah Ripper, Kadeisha Smith and Oakley Turner.

The Hawks’ tally of nine-four means the Two Blues are a win clear of the Tigers.

Players to watch for the Hawks include Molly Metcalf, Shelby Faulkner, Rhian Hobbs and Eliza Long.

A team jointly coached by Geoff West includes Cass Coleman, Drew Ryan, Kelly Mensforth, Olivia Murley and Taylah Nicholson.

Castlemaine has the bye.
