Woorinen thrashes Eaglehawk at Canterbury Park
WOORINEN marked a huge win against Eaglehawk in Sunday’s 18th and final round in the Champions IGA-backed senior women’s footy home-and-away series.
The Tigers and Hawks were both vying to gain a psychological edge ahead of their first semi-final to be played on August 25 at Queen Elizabeth Oval in Bendigo.
Their positions on the ladder flipped as the Katelyn Hazlett-coached Woorinen scored a 139-6 victory on Eaglehawk’s turf at Canterbury Park.
Woorinen scored 18 goals and kept the Two Blues scoreless across the opening three quarters.
The Hawks goaled off the boot of Jess Dover in the final term.
A fired-up Woorinen marked a 133-point victory as Courtney Wakefield led the attack on nine goals and Tenay Fellows kicked seven.
Other goalkickers for the yellow and black were Samantha Johnston, three; Natasha Kelly and Brydi Lewis.
Best for Woorinen were Samantha Johnston, Tenay Fellows, Courtney Wakefield, Ngaire Harlan, Jemma Meehan and Brydi Lewis.
Was a tough afternoon for the Molly Metcalf and Geoff West-coached Hawks in which Cass Coleman, Jess Dover, Emily Field, Anya Cardilini, Shelby Faulkner and Molly Metcalf were best.
Although it could not progress to the finals, Sandhurst fired up for its match against North Bendigo at Queen Elizabeth Oval.
The Dragons led 43-nil at quarter-time and then added seven goals in the second.
It was a much closer contest in the second half.
The Ross Egleton-coached North Bendigo lifted its defensive play to limit Sandhurst to a tally of four goals.
At the final siren Sandhurst led 119-nil.
The Dragons’ attack was led by Amanda Carrod on five goals and Chelsea Reeves on four.
Other multiple goalkickers were Ruby Campbell and Chloe Swatton with two.
Best for Sandhurst were Ruby Campbell, Katie Walker, Amanda Carrod, Chloe Taylor, Chloe Swatton and Annie Campbell.
North Bendigo’s best were Ajay Turner, Heidi Schneider, Kira Gibbons, Tania Thomson, Matilda Henley-Johnstone and Maddie Jelbart.
Dragons’ coach Andrew Saladino could not be at the QEO as he was coaching Heathcote’s senior team in the Heathcote DFNL elimination final against Colbinabbin at Letitchville.
The Dragons end their debut season in the CVFL senior women’s competition with a win-loss tally of nine-six, and a draw.
Castlemaine warmed up for the finals campaign by kicking 30 goals against the Winslow White Hills Demons at the Scott Street ground in White Hills.
The Jordan Cochrane-coached Castlemaine marked a 203-1 victory.
Eloise Gretgrix was in great form on her way to a tally of nine goals as Brianna Burt booted six.
Other multiple goalkickers for the Magpies were Bronte Ashworth, five; Tiahna Cochrane and Maeve Tupper, three; and Tiffany Bradley, two.
Best for Castlemaine were Maeve Tupper, Eloise Gretgrix, Abbey Bertram, Taylah Sartori, Emma Pedretti and Brianna Burt.
Kadeisha Smith, Courtney Gibson, Hannah Ripper, Kayla Ash, Rosie Davies and Katie Wilkinson worked hard for the Phil Murley-coached White Hills.
It was a 25-plus goal win for Golden Square against Bendigo Thunder at Weeroona Oval.
The Nathan Manuel-coached Golden Square scored 24.17 (155) and kept the Mick McInnes-coached Thunder scoreless.
Paynton Jolliffe kicked seven goals to now have a season tally of 90 in 14 matches.
Other multiple goalkickers for the blue and gold were Isabella Ayre, six; Carly Geary, five; and Caitlin Nash, two.
Best for Golden Square were Claire Picone, Isabella Ayre, Kendra Ahearn, Kate Douglass, Taylah Moore and Paynton Jolliffe.
Lucy El Hage, Acacia Edwards, Jessica Jackson, Liza Jane Edwards, Nikeah Anderson and Tammy Norquay were Bendigo Thunder’s best.
Marong had the bye.

Semi-finals will be played next Sunday at Queen Elizabeth Oval in View Street, Bendigo.
Woorinen and Eaglehawk will fight to stay in the premiership race when they meet in the first semi-final at 12.40pm.
Top teams Castlemaine and Golden Square clash in the second semi-final at 2.30pm.
