CVFL Seniors Round 11 Review

BY NATHAN DOLE

Castlemaine wins top contest on Woorinen’s turf

CASTLEMAINE’S remarkable unbeaten streak in the Champions IGA-backed senior women’s footy competition was under threat at three quarter-time of Sunday’s round 11 clash at Woorinen.

Scores were locked on 46-all at a quarter to go in Tigers’ territory.

In the last it was the Jordan Cochrane-coached Castlemaine which kicked away.

The Magpies added 3.2 and kept the yellow and black  scoreless in the final term.

At the final siren Castlemaine led 66-46.

Although disappointed by the final margin there were plenty of positives for the Katelyn Hazlett-coached Woorinen in the rematch of last season’s grand finalists.

Castlemaine’s attack was led by Rachael Stubbings on three goals as captain Tiahna Cochrane and Georgia Gribble added two each.

Brydi Lewis kicked a match-high four goals for Woorinen as Jenna Bannam chipped in with two.

Best for Castlemaine were Brianna Burt, Rachael Stubbings, Jemma Finning, Abbey Bertram, Chelsea Cole and Beppina Marshall.

Jemma Meehan, Katelyn Hazlett, Brydi Lewis, Courtney Wakefield, Ngaire Harlan and Emma Peacock played well for Woorinen.

At Golden Square’s Fur Life Oval it was the Bulldogs up against Eaglehawk in the clash between second and third.

The blue and gold led seven-nil at quarter-time and then scored three goals as it kept the Hawks scoreless in the first half.

The pressure and run by the Nathan Manuel-coached Golden Square was outstanding.

Goalkicking accuracy was another highlight as the Bulldogs scored 7.2 and held the Two Blues to a tally of two behinds in the second half.

At the final siren Golden Square led 69-2.

This round it was Taylah Moore who dominated in attack by kicking eight goals as the competition’s leading goalkicker, Paynton Jolliffe added one.

Captain Liz Watkins was best afield for Golden Square as Taylah Moore, Gemma Free, Michelle McCready, Holly Smith and Ava Barker played well in the team’s eighth win of the season.

Was a tough afternoon for a Hawks line-up jointly coached by Molly Metcalf and Geoff West.

Best for the Borough were Krystal Robinson, Molly Metcalf, Caitlin Evans, Shelby Faulkner, Eliza Long and Eileen Mitchell.

Bendigo Thunder marked a 38-point win against North Bendigo at Weeroona Oval.

The Mick McInnes-coached Thunder scored 9.5 as the Ross Egleton-coached Bulldogs tallied 3.3.

Lists of goalkickers and best players for both teams were not supplied.

Sandhurst marked a 131-point victory against Marong at Queen Elizabeth Oval.

The Andrew Saladino-coached Dragons scored six goals in the first and second quarters and then added three in the third.

Chelsea Reeves went on to kick eight goals as the maroon and blue reached of 20.11 (131).

Other multiple goalkickers were Amanda Carrod, five; Kate Shallard, four; and Lily Campbell, two.

Sandhurst’s best were Amanda Carrod, Lily Campbell, Chelsea Reeves, Ruby Campbell, Imogen Douglass and Kate Shallard.

Crystal Clark, Kyrah Paxton, Amy Cameron, Hannah Cue, Kayla Grant and Dani Jeffery worked hard for the David Blume and Jimmy Evenden-coached Marong.

The Winslow White Hills Demons had the bye.
