Magpies soar to victory on Golden Square’s turf

CASTLEMAINE’S winning run kept rolling as it kicked off the 14th round in Friday night’s clash with Golden Square in the Champions IGA-backed senior women’s footy season.

The clash of the league’s top two was a highlight of Naidoc Round which featured teams wearing Indigenous-themed jumpers and smoking ceremonies.

The Magpies and Bulldogs played on Golden Square’s turf at Fur Life Oval in Wade Street.

A closely-fought opening quarter went the way of the unbeaten Castlemaine, 13-6.

The Magpies scored 1.3 and kept the blue and gold scoreless in the second term.

Golden Square hit back to win the third, 7-2.

An 11-point buffer for the Jordan Cochrane-coached Magpies at the start of the final was 37 by the final siren after they slammed on 6.3 to two goals in the last.

Magpies’ captain Tiahna Cochrane kicked a match-high three goals as Brianna Burt added two in a 62-25 victory.

Golden Square’s attack was led by Paynton Jolliffe on three.

Best for Castlemaine were Tiahna Cochrane, Tia Davidge, Abbey Bertram, Jemma Finning, Beppina Marshall and Bronte Ashworth.

Courtney Hingston, Taylah Moore, Tallulah Duffy, Brooke Hutchinson, Carly Geary and Tanya Walsh played well for the Nathan Manuel-coached blue and gold.

Bendigo Thunder marked an 80-point win against Marong at Weeroona Oval.

Thunder led 26-nil at quarter-time and 58-6 by the main break.

Jaime Sawers and Britney Mueck capped the dominance of Thunder’s midfield and on-ballers by kicking five and four goals in a 93-13 victory.

Thunder’s other multiple goalkicker was Emily Button with two.

Marong captain Dani Jeffery and Kayla Grant were on target.

Best for the Mick McInnes-coached Thunder were Hannah Perry, Jaime Sawers, Britney Mueck, Marguerita Murphy, Ruby Kelly and Ava Fenton.

Kayla Grant, Naomi Ridsdale, Brooke Young, Regeena Torney, Alex Campbell-Smith and Emily Campbell-Smith played well for the David Blume and Jimmy Evenden-coached Panthers.

Eaglehawk co-coach Molly Metcalf kicked a club record 10 goals in the clash with North Bendigo on the Borough’s turf at Canterbury Park.

The Two Blues led 46-nil at quarter-time and 61-nil by half-time.

Inspired by the play of Drew Ryan, Molly Metcalf and Emily Field, Eaglehawk kicked on to score 18.17 (125) as it kept the red, white and blue scoreless.

The Hawks’ attack was led by Molly Metcalf, 10 goals; Molly Pianta, four; and Tayla Nicholson, two.

Best for the Borough line-up which has Geoff West as co-coach included Molly Pianta, Mia Bolitho-Williams and Jess Dover.

Paige Panczel, Aisha Mansfield, Hannah McKenzie, Thallon McEachran, Nicole Woodman and Rhiannon McAdie were best for the Ross Egleton-coached North Bendigo.

Woorinen claimed the four points as Winslow White Hills Demons forfeited the match which was to have been played in Tigers’ territory.

Sandhurst had the bye.

Round 14 kicks off with Friday night’s match between Castlemaine and Eaglehawk at Castlemaine’s Camp Reserve at 7.30pm.

A big match on Sunday will be Sandhurst against Woorinen at Bendigo’s Ewing Park from 1pm.

White Hills takes on Bendigo Thunder at Winslow Constructors Oval in Scott Street, White Hills from 1pm.

North Bendigo has the bye.

The match between Marong and Golden Square was played as a stand-alone match on July 7 at East West Oval in Marong’s Malone Park.

AFLW legend Erin Phillips played a one-off match for Marong as part of the “Carlton Draft” promotion run by Carlton Draught.

Golden Square marked a 119-6 win against Phillips and her Marong team-mates.
