Sandhurst takes big step toward finals

SANDHURST took some big steps toward claiming a finals berth in its debut season in Sunday’s 14th round of the Champions IGA-backed CVFL senior women’s footy competition.

The Andrew Saladino-coached Sandhurst marked a 54-25 win against Woorinen at Bendigo’s Ewing Park.

It was a dramatic turnaround after Woorinen had beaten the maroon and blue by 109 points in Tigers’ territory in round five.

Sandhurst needed a win to keep the heat on the fourth-placed Eaglehawk.

The Dragons led 20-18 at quarter-time and then scored 4.4 as it held the yellow and black to a tally of 1.1 in the second.

Sandhurst’s buffer was 29 points at a quarter to play as it scored a goal and kept Woorinen scoreless in the third term.

Neither line-up added to their score in the last as Sandhurst celebrated a 54-25 victory against last season’s runner-up.

Dragons’ vice-captain Amanda Carrod led the attack on three goals as Maddy White kicked two.

Other goalkickers for Sandhurst were Lily Campbell, Chelsea Reeves and Madeline Sexton.

Goalkickers for Woorinen were Tenay Fellows, Samantha Johnston, Natasha Kelly and  Brydi Lewis.

Best for Sandhurst were Piper Dunlop, Amanda Carrod, Lily Campbell, Madeline Sexton, Maddy White and Chloe Taylor.

Brydi Lewis, Jemma Meehan, Tenay Fellows, Ngaire Harlan, Natasha Kelly and coach Katelyn Hazlett were Woorinen’s best.

Round 14 kicked off with Friday night’s match between Castlemaine and Eaglehawk at Castlemaine’s Camp Reserve.

Castlemaine led 15-7 at quarter-time and then scored 2.4 as the Hawks added a behind in the second.

The Molly Metcalf and Geoff West-coached Eaglehawk fought on to win the third term, 6-1.

In the last it was the Jordan Cochrane-coached Castlemaine which ensured its winning streak kept rolling as it added 2.3 and kept the Two Blues scoreless.

Tiahna Cochrane, Eloise Gretgrix and Rachael Stubbings all kicked two goals in a 47-14 victory for the Magpies.

Goalkickers for the Hawks were Drew Ryan and Lilly Stevenson.

Castlemaine’s best were Tiahna Cochrane, Maeve Tupper, Jemma Finning, Rachael Stubbings, Chelsea Cole and Bella Phillips.

Eliza Long, Jess Dover, Molly Metcalf, Shelby Faulnker, Taylah Petrusma and Drew Ryan were the Borough’s best.

Bendigo Thunder rolled to a 20-goal win against the Winslow White Hills Demons at the Scott Street ground in White Hills on Sunday.

The Mick McInnes-coached Thunder charged to a 28-nil lead by quarter-time and then added 6.5 to nil in the second.

Led by the play of Lucy El Hage, Shasta Martion and Emily Galtieri, Thunder had scored 13 goals and kept the Demons scoreless in the opening three terms.

White Hills broke through Thunder’s defence through Kara Kane to goal in the last.

At the final siren Thunder led 127-6.

Leaders in Thunder’s attack were Serryn Eenjes, four; Lucy El Hage, three; Nikeah Anderson and Jamie Sawers, two.

Best for Bendigo Thunder included Acacia Edwards, Jaime Sawers and Liza Jane Edwards.

Courtney Gibson, Oakley Turner, Hannah Ripper, Kadeisha Smith, Trudie Newton and Rosie Davies played well for the Phil Murley-coached White Hills.

The match between Marong and Golden Square was played on July 7 at East West Oval in Marong’s Malone Park.

Although Marong had AFLW legend Erin Phillips in its line-up for a one-off match as part of the Carlton Draft promotion it was Golden Square which won 119-6 in the Panthers den.

North Bendigo had the bye this round.

Round 15 kicks off with two matches next Friday night.

The Ross Egleton-coached North Bendigo will take on Castlemaine at Bendigo Club Oval in North Bendigo’s Atkins Street from 7pm.

Golden Square and White Hills will clash at Fur Life Oval in Golden Square’s Wade Street from 7.15pm.

On Sunday it will be Marong against Eaglehawk at East West Oval in Marong’s Malone Park from 12.45pm.

Bendigo Thunder faces Sandhurst at Weeroona Oval in Bendigo’s Napier Street from 1.30pm.

Woorinen has the bye.
