Woorinen fights for victory at Golden Square

THE Tigers from Woorinen clawed their way to victory at Golden Square in Sunday’s finale to round 17 in the Champions IGA CVFL senior women’s footy season.

Last season’s runner-up showed it can be a contender for the premiership as it fought for a 45-42 victory against the second-placed Golden Square at Fur Life Oval in Wade Street.

Woorinen led 18-8 at half-time.

The Bulldogs struck back to win the third term, 15-7.

Both line-ups scored three goals in the last quarter, as the Tigers tally of 3.2 as the blue and gold added 3.1 was enough to seal the four premiership points.

Woorinen captain Tenay Fellows led the attack on three goals.

Golden Square gun forward Paynton Jolliffe lifted her season tally to 83 as she kicked three goals.

Woorinen coach Katelyn Hazlett was best afield and had great support from Jemma Meehan, Emma Peaock, Courtney Wakefield, Ngaire Harland and Tenay Fellows.

Best for the Nathan Manuel-coached Golden Square were Kate Douglass, Carly Geary, Paynton Jolliffe, Sarah Mannes, Molly Forde and Gemma Roberts.

The round kicked off with Friday night’s matches at Eaglehawk and Castlemaine.

The Eaglehawk and Sandhurst match at Canterbury Park was abandonded after an Eaglehawk player was injured.

Sandhurst led the contest when the game was called off.

The unbeaten Castlemaine scored a 101-point win against Marong under the Camp Reserve lights.

Eloise Gretgrix led the Magpies’ attack on seven goals in a best afield performance as Tiffany Bradley kicked three.

Best for the Jordan Cochrane-coached Castlemaine were Eloise Gretgrix, Abbey Bertram, Lily den Houting, Tiahna Cochrane, Tia Davidge and Tiffany Bradley.

Was a tough night for the David Blume and Jimmy Evenden-coached Marong in which Bianca Bourke, Alex Campbell-Smith, Steph Dawson, Alex Purdy, Naomi Ridsdale and Gemma Woodall were best for the Panthers.

In Sunday’s other match, North Bendigo led 10-nil when the match was abandoned due to an injury that required an ambulance at Bendigo Club Oval in Atkins Street.

Kayla-Brea McIntosh had goaled for the Bulldogs.

Best for North Bendigo were Maddie Jelbart, Roweena Ilsley, Aisha Mansfield, Kayla-Brea McIntosh, Maddison Hargreaves-Hale and Nicole Brannan.

Bendigo Thunder had the bye.

The 18th and final round in the home-and-away series will be played next Sunday.

Eaglehawk takes on Woorinen in the match of the round from 1pm at Eaglehawk’s Canterbury Park.

Sandhurst and North Bendigo will clash from 1pm at Queen Elizabeth Oval.

Winslow White Hills Demons play Castlemaine from 1pm at the Scott Street ground in White Hills.

Bendigo Thunder and Golden Square strive for the points from 1.30pm at Weeroona Oval in Napier Street.

Marong has the bye.
