Dragons fire against Thunder under QEO lights

SANDHURST’S senior women’s footy team marked its first match under the Queen Elizabeth Oval lights by winning Friday night’s clash with Bendigo Thunder.

The Dragons and Thunder met in the sixth round of the Champions IGA-backed CVFL senior women’s footy competition.

From a tally of nine scoring shots in the first quarter, Sandhurst led 2.7 to 1.2 at the first break.

Thunder lifted to win the second, 14-7.

The Andrew Saladino-coached Sandhurst led 33-25 at a quarter to play and then scored 2.1 to nil in the last for a 46-25 victory.

Goalkickers for the maroon and blue were Lily Campbell, Imogen Douglass, Madeline Sexton, Kate Shallard, Katie Walker and Maddy White.

Thunder’s attack was led by Jaime Sawers on two as Tammy Norquay added another.

Best for the Dragons were Madeline Sexton, Ruby and Lily Campbell, Maddy White, Katie Walker and Hayley Wallace.

Emily Galtieri, Liza Jane Edwards, Tracey Anderson, Alannah Leach, Marguerita Murphy and Lucy El Hage played well for the Mick McInnes-coached Thunder.

Eaglehawk marked a 55-point victory against Marong in Friday night’s match on the Borough’s turf at Canterbury Park.

The Hawks led 9-0 at quarter-time and 26-0 by the main break.

An Eaglehawk team jointly coached by Molly Metcalf and Geoff West won the next two terms, 17-0, and 13-1.

At the final siren, Eaglehawk led 56-1 against a Marong team coached by David Blume and Jimmy Evenden.

Metcalf led the attack on three goals as Lilly Stevenson added two.

Best for Eaglehawk were Eliza Long, Cass Coleman, Neve Nisbet, Lilly Stevenson, Grace Murley and Emily Field.

Marong’s best were Bianca Bourke, Cody Clark, Katrina Alford, Dani Jeffery, Regeena Torney and Kyrah Paxton.

Details from the Castlemaine and North Bendigo match on Friday night at Castlemaine’s Camp Reserve were not supplied.

The round was completed on Sunday where the Winslow White Hills Demons took on Golden Square.

White Hills was on home turf at Winslow Constructors Oval in Scott Street.

After scoring four goals in the first term, Golden Square scored 8.5 in the second.

An 85-point lead for the Bulldogs at half-time became 135 at a quarter to go.

Paynton Jolliffe went on to kick 10 goals in a best afield performance as the blue and gold marked a 200-nil victory.

Other multiple goalkickers were Isabella Ayre, six; Kate Douglass, Tania Kerrison three; Sarah Mannes, Taylah Moore and Victoria Winstanley, two.

Best for the Nathan Manuel-coached Golden Square were Paynton Jolliffe, Michelle McCready, Carly Geary, Kate Douglass, Molly Forde and Tania Kerrison.

Oakley Turner, Jemma Kiernan, Courtney Gibson, Daisy Gee, Kadeisha Smith and Olivia Basile worked hard for the Phil Murley-coached White Hills team.

Because of the inter-league challenge on May 19 at Mercy Junortoun Sports Precinct there will be no play on May 18-19 for CVFL senior women’s footy teams.

The CVFL senior women’s season resumes on May 24 when two matches are played under lights.

North Bendigo faces Marong from 7pm at Bendigo Club Oval in North Bendigdo’s Atkins Street.

Eaglehawk is on home turf at Canterbury Park to play the Winslow White Hills Demons from 7.15pm.

On Saturday, May 25 it will be Golden Square and Sandhurst in a twilight match from 5pm at the Wade Street ground in Golden Square.

Round six will be completed on May 26 when Bendigo Thunder takes on Woorinen from 1pm at Weeroona Oval in Bendigo’s Napier Street.

Castlemaine has the bye.
