Demons weather Storm’s challenge
WHITE Hills withstood a spirited challenge from Strathfieldsaye to win Sunday’s match in round 17 of the Champions IGA-backed CVFL under-18 girls footy season.
The Winslow White Hills Demons had home-ground advantage in Scott Street.
After a strong start, White Hills led 14-7 at quarter-time.
Storm struck back to win the second term, 9-3.
The ladder-leading Demons held a four-point buffer going into the final quarter.
Inspired by the play of Jorja Morrison, Eve Cail and Catherine Fry, White Hills turned up the heat and scored 2.3 as it kept the visitors scoreless.
At the final siren White Hills led 47-28.
Nadia Peebles led the Demons attack on two goals.
There were no multiple goalkickers for Storm.
Best for White Hills included Lily Rochester, Chelsea Edwards and Ella Henery.
Strathfieldsaye’s best were Gemma Fox, Tessa Skipper, Sophie Ryan, Scarlett Ward, Maddie Dunn and Layla Morrison.
Round 17 kicked off with Friday night’s match between Eaglehawk and Sandhurst at Canterbury Park.
In what would be its final hit-out of the year, Sandhurst fired up to score a big win.
The Dragons kicked 25 goals in a 169-nil victory.
Hannah Cochrane was in great touch as she kicked eight goals.
Other multiple goalkickers for the maroon ad blue were Georgia Garlick, six; Ava Bibby, five; Ellie Bellenger and Scout Carmody, two.
Lists of best players for both teams were not supplied.
On Sunday, Golden Square marked a 13-goal win against Castlemaine at Golden Square’s Fur Life Oval in Wade Street.
The Bulldogs led 29-nil at quarter-time and 47-nil by the main break.
Castlemaine worked hard to hold the blue and gold to a point in the third term as the Magpies added two points.
Five goals in the last capped an 80-2 win for Golden Square.
Ella Gourley led the attack on five goals as Lily Mansfield added two.
Best for Golden Square were Bella Eddy, Ava Barker, Lily Mansfield, Gemma McPhee, Ruby Demeo and Katrina O’Neil.
Miharo WiHare, Amelia Britt, Maddyson Hewson, Shelby Kitchingham, Olivia Muscat and Kate Batchelor were Castlemaine’s best.
Woorinen had the bye.
Champions IGA-backed CVFL under-18 girls footy ladder:
White Hills 257 per cent, 48 points; Golden Square 265, 40; Woorinen 125, 36; Strathfieldsaye 124, 32; Sandhurst 140, 28; Castlemaine 57, 20; Eaglehawk 9, 0.
The final round in the home-and-away series will be played next Sunday.
Strathfieldsaye takes on Golden Square from 10.30am at Triple M Park in Strathfieldsaye’s Tannery Lane.
Eaglehawk plays Woorinen from 11.15am at Eaglehawk’s Canterbury Park.
The Winslow White Hills Demons are home in Scott Street again to play Castlemaine from 11.15am.
Sandhurst has the bye.
