Feast of women’s footy finals at Castlemaine’s Camp Reserve

FOUR semi-finals across the Champions IGA-backed CVFL senior women’s and under-18 girls footy competitions will be played this Sunday at Castlemaine’s Camp Reserve.

In the seniors competition it will be Eaglehawk against Sandhurst in the first semi-final.

The Hawks and Dragons will fight to stay in the premiership race when their clash starts at 12.40pm.

These teams met just two weeks at Queen Elizabeth Oval.

The Andrew Saladino and Liam Ireland-coached Sandhurst scored a 30-18 victory.

When they met in round eight the Molly Metcalf-coached Eaglehawk dominated on its ground at Canterbury Park to nail a 63-2 win.

The first semi-finalists achieved identical win-loss records of 10-4 as Eaglehawk racked up 397 per cent and Sandhurst was on 192.

After it beat the Hawks by two goals in round 17, Sandhurst had the bye last round.

Best for Sandhurst in the win against the Two Blues were Lacey Nihill, Katie Walker, Paynton Jolliffe and Varlee Nihill.

The squad in the maroon and blue includes Ruby Campbell, Scott Carmody, Chloe Naughton, Chelsea Reeves, Charlotte Scanlon and Chloe Swatton.

Eaglehawk’s best against Sandhurst in the 17th round were Lexie Moss, Abbey Willcox, Caitlin Evans and Molly Metcalf.

The Borough’s squad includes Grace Edlin, Lucy El Hage, Caitlin Evans, Shelby Faulkner, Eliza Long and Molly Pianta.

It’s a rematch of the ’24 grand finalists when Castlemaine takes on Golden Square in Sunday’s second semi-final at 2.30pm.

Beaten just once in the home-and-away series, Castlemaine will be tough to beat on its ground.

The Jordan Cochrane-coached Castlemaine marked a 54-nil victory in the Good Friday match against Golden Square at Camp Reserve.

When they met in round eight, Castlemaine won 42-16 on Golden Square’s ground in Wade Street.

A powerful team representing Castlemaine includes Brianna Burt, Ella and Tiahna Cochrane, Lily Den Houting, Jemma Finning, Eloise Gretgrix, Emma Pedretti, Taylah Sartori and Maeve Tupper.

Massive challenge for the Carly Geary and Bec McLay-coached Golden Square to win this match and be first to the September 5 grand final.

Players to watch in the blue and gold include Mackenzie Bickley, Kate Douglass, Gabby Drage, Jetah Keighran, Taylah Moore, Gemma Roberts, Lauren Suleiman, Tanya Walsh, and captain Liz Watkins.

Sunday’s big day of footy in Castlemaine kicks off with the under-18 girls first semi-final between Sandhurst and White Hills at 9am.

These teams drew 30-all at Queen Elizabeth Oval in round seven.

When they met against in round 16 it was Sandhurst which dominated in a 96-22 victory in the den of the Winslow Constructors White Hills Demons in Scott Street.

The Dragons warmed up for the finals by ending Woorinen’s unbeaten run last Sunday.

Woorinen’s Tigers will be desperate to hit back when it meets Golden Square in Sunday’s second semi-final at 10.50am.

The Tigers defeated Golden Square by margins of 55 and 41 points in the home-and-away series.

Both times the Bulldogs were goalless.

Woorinen won 58-3 in round nine at home and then 43-2 at Golden Square in the 16th round.

Sandhurst proved last Sunday that Woorinen is not unbeatable.
