Golden Square dominates under-18 girls semi-final

GOLDEN Square outgunned the Winslow White Hills Demons in the Champions IGA-backed CVFL under-18 girls footy second semi-final on Sunday.

The Bulldogs dominated play against an opponent which was beaten just twice across the 16-round home-and-away series.

Such was the dominance of White Hills it finished 12 points clear of the second-placed Golden Square.

Previous results and form did not faze Golden Square as it took to Queen Elizabeth Oval in Bendigo.

At stake was being first to qualify for the grand final on September 6.

A tally of 17 scoring shots to just one was a clear indicator of the dominance the blue and gold had in this match.

Golden Square led 8-6 at quarter-time and then scored 2.3 as it kept the Demons scoreless in the second term.

The Bulldogs ramped up the pressure and teamed brilliantly across the second half.

As the blue and gold racked up a tally of 3.6 the defensive play was a highlight as White Hills did not score.

In a remarkable turnaround it was Golden Square which marked a 47-6 victory.

Goalkickers for the blue and gold were co-captain Mackenzie Bickley, Ruby Demeo, Lucy Johansen, Luci Kornmann, Lily Mansfield and Gemma McPhee.

The  Demons’ goalkicker was Amelie Haigh.

Bulldogs’ co-captain Ava Barker was best afield and had great support from Mackenzie Bickley, Bella Eddy, Gemma McPhee, Lily Manfield and Lucy Johansen.

White Hills will now focus on next Friday’s preliminary final to be played against Woorinen at the QEO from 5.30pm.

The Woorinen Tigers won Sunday’s first semi-final against Strathfieldsaye by seven goals.

A closely-fought opening quarter went Woorinen’s way, 23-18.

The Tigers then scored three straight goals and kept Storm scoreless in term two.

As Woorinen added 3.2 in the third there was no reply by Strathfieldsaye as the yellow and black held a 43-point lead going into the last quarter.

Storm worked hard to win the term, 14-13, but it was Woorinen which marked an impressive 11.8 (74) to 5.2 (32) victory.
