Ultima breaks Hay’s unbeaten streak

ULTIMA broke Hay’s unbeaten run in Saturday’s 14th round in the Golden Rivers senior footy action.

In a rematch of last season’s grand finalists it was Ultima which won three quarters of the match on its turf to claim an 88-64 victory.

The Lions were gunning for a 14th consecutive win, but Ultima was too strong.

The Kangaroos led 26-24 at quarter-time, but the Lions accuracy was a key factor as it scored 7.1 to 6.5 in the first half.

Ultima won the third term, 25-22, and then added 3.4 to 1.3 in the last to complete an 88-64 victory.

Ryan Devereux led the Kangaroos’ attack on five goals as Bailey Codling added three.

Leading goalkickers for the Lions were Jack Bone, Jack Cattanach and Kenneth Jubb on two each.

Ultima’s best were Mitchell Seton-Stewart, Ed Kuchel, Thomas Bull, Corey Grey, Matt  Taverna and Lincoln Frost.

Jack Cattanach, James Moran, Dean Aylett, Nathan Wilson, Hugh Crighton and Daniel Stewart played well for Hay.

Moulamein marked an upset win at Macorna.

The Swans went in as underdogs against the fourth-placed Tigers at Macorna.

A high-scoring first half ended with Macorna in front, 59-56.

Moulamein then charged to a 20-point buffer by the last change as it scored 3.5 to nil in the third quarter.

The Tigers fought back to win the last, 20-7, but it was the Swans who triumphed 86-79 and celebrated their second win of the season.

Moulamein’s attack was led by Kaylem Hartley on four goals as Lochlan Prentice added three and Xander Hartland and Ely Miller chipped in with two each.

Lachlan Ritchie kicked a match-high six goals for Macorna as Oscar Don booted three and Malcolm Neiwand added two.

Best for Moulamein were Rodney Reeves, Cody Storm, Lochlan Prentice, Xander Hartland, Nathan Bath and Ethan Fitzpatrick.

William Canham, Malcolm Neiwand, Oscar Don, Michael Roberts, Lachlan Ritchie and Jackson Gray played well for the yellow and black.

Wandella defeated Murrabit by 41 points in the Bombers’ hangar at Wandella Recreation Reserve.

The Wandella line-up led 32-12 at quarter-time and then scored 2.8 to 1.3 in the second.

A closely-fought third term went the way of the red and black, 21-19.

Michael Rowe went on to kick three goals as Logan Keighran and Connor Wilson added two each in a 102-61 result.

A match-high five goals by Patrick Bryan was a highlight for Murrabit.

Best for Ultima were John Cooper, Tim Robinson, Kaine O’Connell, Ryan Lancaster, Adam McKenzie and Jonty Taylor.

Patrick Bryan was best for the Blues as Jordan Lampi, Dean Harrop, Sam Copland, Liam Holt-Fitz and Brody Palmer also played well for Murrabit.

Golden Rivers senior footy ladder:

Hay 319 per cent, 52 points; Ultima 224, 48; Wandella 87, 28; Macorna 64, 20; Murrabit 50, 12; Moulamein 55, 8.

The 15th and second-last round in the home-and-away series will be played on Saturday.

Murrabit is at home to play Moulamein from 2.25pm.

Ultima tackles Macorna in the clash of the Kangaroos and Tigers.

Wandella and Hay meet at Wandella Recreation Reserve.
