Lions, Swans rule as finals kick off

HAY and Moulamein were victorious in the weekend’s senior footy semi-finals in the Golden Rivers competition.

The Lions outplayed Ultima in Saturday’s second semi-final at Hay Recreation Reserve.

Scores were 31-all at half-time before Hay kicked away in the third quarter.

As the Lions slammed on five goals in term three they kept the Kangaroos to just two majors.

By the last change Hay was up 64-44.

The Lions then scored four straight goals in the final term to complete an 88-63 victory.

Dean Aylett, Dylan Collis, Jack Headon, Declan Watson and Jacob Watson all kicked two goals as Fergus Cattanach and Harry Loughnan were also on target.

Ultima’s attack was led by Dustin Burns on three goals as Corey Grey added two.

Other goalkickers for the Kangaroos were Bailey Codling, Josh Dwyer, Ryan Featherby, Jye Purtill and Mitch Seton-Stewart.

Hay’s best were Fergus and Jack Cattanach, Jacob Watson, Dean Aylett, Dylan Collis and Jayden Kinces.

Best for the Kangaroos were Martyn Cooper, Brad Anderson, Thomas Isma, Jake Foster, Dustin Burns and Caillum Brady.

The Jason Aylett and James Moran-coached Hay has qualified for the September 6 grand final in Macorna.

An Ultima team coached by Mitch Seton-Stewart and Kyle Symons has to bounce back in Saturday’s preliminary final against Moulamein in Wandella to earn a grand final shot.

A high-scoring first half at Moulamein was won by the Swans, 54-47.

Moulamein then unleashed a six-goal blitz in the third quarter.

As the Swans scored 6.1 they kept the Blues to a score of 1.1.

By the last change Moulamein led 91-54.

The Jack Shannahan-coached Murrabit worked hard to win the last term, 20-16, but it was Moulamein which marked a 107-74 victory.

Brett Kennedy and Tobie Richardson led the Swans’ attack on five and three goals.

Other goalkickers for Moulamein were Adam Saunders, two; Trae Atkinson, Hayden Dalitz, Ethan Fitzpatrick, Xander Hartland, Blake Launer and Mitchell Ryan.

Murrabit’s attack was led by Patrick Bryan and Jack Shannahan on three goals each as Riley Carse, Brody Palmer, James Russo and Adam Thomson were also on target.

Best for the Brodie Tonkin and Hayden Dalitz-coached Moulamein were Josh Wills, Blake Launer, Tobie Richardson, George Austin, Xander Hartland and Trae Atkinson.

Jack Shannahan, James Stewart, Bailey Pengelly, Rhys Carmichael, Matt Moon and Nathan Morrow played well for the Blues.

In the reserves competition, Ultima is first to the grand final after a 76-48 win against Murrabit in the second semi-final.

It was a dramatic finish to the reserves first semi-final on Sunday as Hay clinched a 71-66 win against Wandella.

Macorna dominated the under-18s second semi-final against Wandella.

The Tigers roared in a 152-21 victory against the Bombers.

Ultima stayed in the cup race as it won Sunday’s first semi-final against Hay by 26 points.

Finals action kicked off with the under-15s second semi-final between Murrabit and Hay.

The Blues won 40-12 in the Lions’ den at Hay Recreation Reserve.

On Sunday it was Macorna which marked a 36-18 victory against Wandella in the first semi-final.

Reserves at 12.35pm: Murrabit v Hay.
