Sandhurst targets another upset

FRESH from breaking Castlemaine’s long-running win streak, Sandhurst will target another upset in Friday night’s Champions IGA-backed CVFL senior women’s footy.

Round 12 kicks off with the showdown between Sandhurst and Golden Square from 7.15pm at Ewing Park off Williamson Street in Bendigo.

Both teams had the bye last round and will be fired up for the clash between fourth and third.

When these teams last met it was Golden Square which dominated the Anzac
Day match in Wade Street to mark a 46-nil win.

A win-loss tally of six-three has the Carly Geary and Bec McLay-coached Golden Square in third place.

Sandhurst’s great win at Castlemaine’s Camp Reserve in the 10th round was the club’s best of the season.

Best for the Dragons in the 68-60 win against the Magpies were Georgia Garlick, Lacey Nihill, Lara Bish and Katie Walker.

The Sandhurst squad coached by Andrew Saladino and Liam Ireland includes Scout Carmody, captain Ruby Campbell, Chelsea Reeves, Chloe Naughton and Arkie Donnelly.

Latest hit-out for the Bulldogs was at Eaglehawk’s Canterbury Park a fortnight ago.

The Hawks won a hard-fought night game, 8-4.

Key players for Golden Square include Mackenzie Bickley, Tahlia Casey-White, Taylah Moore and Lauren Suleiman.

The squad in blue and gold includes Gabby Drage, Emma Gilligan, Jetah Keighran and captain Liz Watkins.

Two matches will be played on Sunday.

Marong will be on home turf at Jackal Oval in Malone Park to play Castlemaine from 1pm.

It’s a huge challenge for the Panthers following a 40-nil loss at Eaglehawk’s Canterbury Park last Friday night.

Best for Marong against the Hawks were Katrina Alford, Crystal Clark, Bianca Bourke and Dani Jeffery.

The Panthers’ midfielders and on-ballers will need to bring a high level of pressure to not allow Castlemaine to attack at will.

The Jimmy Evenden and Daniel Bourke-coached Marong has played well to achieve a win-loss tally of four-four and be within a win of the fourth-placed Sandhurst.

Stung by its first defeat in more than 40 matches, Castlemaine will be fired up.

A powerful Magpies’ line-up coached by Jordan Cochrane includes Maeve Tupper, Brianna Burt, Evie Nuttall, Taylah Sartori and Georgia Gordon.

Bendigo Thunder meets Eaglehawk in Sunday’s other match at Weeroona Oval in Bendigo’s Napier Street from 1pm.

It’s been a tough season for the Mick McInnes-coached Thunder.

Best in Thunder’s latest match against Marong were Jess Dover, Maddi Brackenreg, Sharlene Cole and Rachel Salm.

Thunder’s squad includes Sharlene Cole, co-captains Katherine Christie and Estella Murphy, and Shasta Martion.

A seven-two record has earnt the Hawks second place in the premiership race.

The Molly Metcalf-coached Eaglehawk will be determined to not let standards slip.

Best in the Borough’s win against Marong last round were Emily Field, Caitlin Evans, Molly Pianta and Melanie Krause.

Eaglehawk’s squad includes Anya Cardilini, Mary Fisher, Abbey Free and Kelly Mensforth.

North Bendigo and White Hills have the bye.
