Sharp claims third Ron Best Medal

BY NATHAN DOLE

Strathfieldsaye Storm co-captain Lachlan Sharp has claimed the Ron Best Medal as leading goalkicker for a third time.

Sharp’s tally was 93 goals in 16 matches across the home-and-away series.

He goes into this Saturday’s preliminary final needing five goals to hit the century mark.

In a brilliant career, Sharp has played a significant role in Strathfieldsaye Storm’s run of four premiership victories.

Since 2013, Storm has played in seven of eight grand finals and achieved a win-loss tally of 4-3.

Sharp’s best season was in 2017 when he captured the Michelsen Medal as league fairest and best; kicked 142 goals to win his first Ron Best Medal; and Storm beat Eaglehawk in the grand final.

Two years later Sharp kicked 129 goals and Storm against defeated the Hawks in the clash for the Bendigo Advertiser premiership cup.

A tally of 55 goals by Eaglehawk’s Ryan Wellington clinched this season’s reserves goalkicking award in the Harmac Homes-backed competition.

Wellington and his Hawks’ team-mates have won their way to the grand final where they will meet Sandhurst or Strathfieldsaye.

Captain of Sandhurst’s team, Alex Carr powered to victory in the SportsPower under-18s goalkicking award.

Carr kicked 52 goals in the home-and-away series.

The Dragons take on Gisborne in this Saturday’s preliminary final.

Winner advances to a showdown with Golden Square for the premiership cup.
