Square, Borough vie to make grand final

GOLDEN Square and Eaglehawk will be vying to reach the Champions IGA-backed CVFL senior women’s footy grand final in Friday night’s preliminary final.

The Bulldogs and Hawks will clash at Queen Elizabeth Oval in Bendigo’s View Street from 7.30pm.

Runner-up last September, Golden Square will be desperate to earn another crack at Castlemaine in the season decider.

Eaglehawk is yet to feature in a CVFL senior women’s footy grand final.

This season’s meetings between the Bulldogs and Hawks stand at one-all.

In round two the Carly Geary and Bec McLay-coached Golden Square scored a 64-1 victory on its turf in Wade Street.

On a cold and windswept night in mid-June it was the Molly Metcalf-coached Eaglehawk which fought on for an 8-4 win at Canterbury Park.

Semi-finals were played last Sunday at Castlemaine’s Camp Reserve.

A great day for Eaglehawk kicked off with a 64-51 win against Sandhurst in the first semi-final.

The Hawks’ attack was led by Sienna Hobbs and Shelby Faulkner on four and two goals.

Best for the Two Blues were Caitlin Evans, Lexie Moss, Abbey Willcox and Molly Metcalf.

The Hawks’ squad for Friday night’s match includes Cass Coleman, Emily Field, Eliza Long and Krystal Robinson in defence, Emily Galtieri as ruck-rover, and Molly Pianta, Lucy El Hage and Shanae Sawyer in attack.

Golden Square faced Castlemaine in last Sunday’s second semi-final.

The Bulldogs were up 14-9 at half-time but could not halt the Magpies’ run in the next two quarters.

Aiming for a fourth consecutive premiership, the Jordan Cochrane-coached Castlemaine showed it will be tough to stop as it marked a 62-27 win against the blue and gold.

Best for Golden Square in the second semi-final were Lauren Suleiman, Mackenzie Bickley, Ava Barker and Taylah Moore.

The Bulldogs’ team to tackle the Hawks includes captain Liz Watkins in the centre, Gabby Drage as rover, and Molly Forde, Taylah Moore, Holly Smith and Tanya Walsh in defence.

Targets in Golden Square’s attack include Kate Douglass, Bella Eddy and Claire Picone.

Friday’s footy action at the QEO kicks off with the Champions IGA-backed CVFL under-18 girls preliminary final between Golden Square and Sandhurst at 5.30pm.

The Bulldogs are on the rebound from a 37-point loss to Woorinen in the second semi.

Best for Golden Square against Woorinen were Jayde Chappel, Lucy Johansen, Shoshanna Love and Lily Mansfield.

Sandhurst kicked off its finals campaign by scoring a 99-point win against White Hills in the first semi.

The Dragons’ charge to victory was led by Leni Brown, Ellie Bellenger, Hannah Guo and Ryah Mackie.

Both of the Bulldogs and Dragons showdowns in the home-and-away series went Golden Square’s way by seven and six points.
