GOLDEN Square won an exciting clash with Sandhurst in Friday night’s start to round 12 in the Champions IGA-backed CVFL senior women’s footy season.
The Dragons and Bulldogs played under the Ewing Park lights.
Sandhurst led 8-1 at quarter-time before the blue and gold struck back to score two goals as it kept the Dragons to a point in the second term.
Both teams added a goal in the third.
Defences controlled a lot of the last term as both line-ups added a behind.
At the final siren Golden Square led 22-16.
Captain Liz Watkins kicked two goals as Ruby Demeo was also on target in the Bulldogs win.
Lacey Nihill kicked both of Sandhurst’s goals.
Golden Square’s best were Ava Barker, Kate Douglass, Claire Picone, Liz Watkins, Mackenzie Bickley and Taylah Moore.
Katie Walker, Lacey Nihill, Lara Bish, Sarah Baldwin, Georgia Garlick and Varlee Nihill were best for the Andrew Saladino and Liam Ireland-coached Sandhurt.
Details from the Marong and Castlemaine match played on Sunday at Jackal Oval in Marong’s Malone Park were not supplied.
Eaglehawk soared to a 98-point win against Bendigo Thunder at Weeroona Oval.
The Hawks led 17-nil at quarter-time and 38-nil by the main break.
Although it faced a 62-point deficit going into the final term, Bendigo Thunder kept working and was rewarded with a goal by Jess Dover.
The Molly Metcalf-coached Eaglehawk added seven goals in the last quarter to complete a 104-6 victory.
A great match by Metcalf was capped with five goals as Molly Pianta and Lilly Stevenson chipped in with two each.
Best for the Hawks were Lexie Moss, Lucy El Hage, Caitlin Evans, Shelby Faulkner, Lilly Stevenson and Emily Field.
Stacey Barbagallo, Maddi Brackenreg, Molly Horne, Jess Dover, Hollie Maher and Alannah Leach were best for the Mick McInnes-coached Thunder.
North Bendigo and White Hills had the bye.

The CVFL marks Indigenous Round next weekend.
Action in the 13th round kicks off with Friday’s match between Winslow Constructors White Hills Demons and Castlemaine at Scott Street in White Hills from 7pm.
On Saturday it will be North Bendigo and Eaglehawk under lights at Bendigo Club Oval in North Bendigo’s Atkins Street from 5.30pm.
Both of Sunday’s matches start at 1pm.
Bendigo Thunder will face Sandhurst at Weeroona Oval in Napier Street.
Marong takes on Golden Square in the Panthers’ den at Jackal Oval in Marong’s Malone Park.

Round 12 in the Champions IGA-backed CVFL under-18 girls competition kicked off with Friday night’s match between Sandhurst and Golden Square at Ewing Park.
The Bulldogs marked a 48-42 win on Sandhurst’s turf.
Jayda Lockwood kicked three goals for Golden Square as Lily Mansfield added two.
Sandhurst’s leading goalkickers were Leni Brown and Neve Pinner on two.
Best for Golden Square were Shanae Rotherham, Lucy Gilbee, Ruby Demeo, Jayda Lockwood, Lily Mansfield and Remi Cooke-Kingston.
Sandhurst’s best were Leni Brown, Tully Place, Mia Maxted, Neve Pinner, Eillish Grieve and Eva Cathrine.
On Sunday, Woorinen scored a 168-nil victory on Kangaroo Flat’s ground in Dower Park.
Issy Boulton and Charli Conway led the Tigers’ attack on four goals.
