Macorna breaks season ‘duck’ in wet

MACORNA broke its winless streak in this season’s Golden Rivers senior footy action as it fought for a two-point win at home against Murrabit in Saturday’s 12th round.

The Tigers made a superb start against Murrabit to lead 15-6 at quarter-time.

In the second it was Murrabit which controlled most of the play.

As the Blues scored 1.5 they kept the yellow and black scoreless.

Macorna then won the third term, 13-8.

Although it did not in a dramatic last quarter, Macorna’s work to hold the Blues to just a point meant it clinched a 28-26 victory.

The Tigers’ attack was led by Connor Burge on two goals as Luke Gray and Reece Wissell were on target.

Goalkickers for Macorna were Jordan Lampi, Zac McClure-Page, and coach Jack Shannahan.

Best for the Tigers were Tori Ferguson, Reece Wissell, John Officer, Corey Walters, Cooper Carmichael and Conner Burge.

Victory also capped the hard work of Macorna’s joint coaches Paul Longstaff and Shaun Haffenden.

Murrabit’s best were Bryden Morison, Pras Sayakhot, Ryan Harvey, Jack Shannahan, Austin McKerrow and Brody Palmer.

Top teams Hay and Ultima marked big wins.

The Ultima Kangaroos bounced back from a loss at Moulamein the previous round by scoring a 69-point victory against Wandella.

What became a high-scoring contest began with Ultima winning the opening term, 45-21.

The Kangaroos led 66-29 by the long-break.

A closely-fought third term went Wandella’s way, 20-19.

Ultima kicked away in the last quarter as it added five goals and kept the Bombers to a point.

Dustin Burns was in hot form in the cold conditions as he kicked seven goals for Ultima as Ryan Devereux and Corey Grey added four and three majors.

Jake Foster chipped in with two goals for Ultima.

Wandella’s leading goalkicker was Connor Jamieson with two.

Best for Ultima were Jake Foster, Dustin Burns, Ryan Featherby, Angus Hinton, Jack Delmenico and co-coach Mitch Seton-Stewart.

The Kangas also have Kyle Symons as co-coach.

Wandella’s best were Connor Jamieson, coach Justin Robinson, Gregor Knight, John Cooper, Oliver Macartney and Laing Waddingham.

Hay charged to a 15-goal win at home against Moulamein.

It was a danger game for the ladder-leading Lions against the Swans.

Injuries and unavailability hit Moulamein for this contest.

The Lions showed no mercy as they scored nine goals in the first quarter to be up 60-1 at the break.

Moulamein worked hard to hold Hay to a goal in the second.

Hay then scored four majors in the third as it led 96-5 going into the last.

The Swans gave their all to notch a goal but could not do so in what was a scoreless final term for both teams.

Jack Headon increased his lead in the goalkicking race by slotting seven goals.

Lions’ co-captain Jack Cattanach booted three majors in a best on ground performance.

Others to star for Hay were Fergus Cattanach, Jack Headon, Jacob Watson, Brad Pocock and Simon Darlow.

The Lions are jointly coached by Jason Aylett and James Moran.

Was a tough hit-out for Moulamein in which Mark Drotsky, Tobie Richardson, Heath Moloney, Ely Miller, Kaleb Richards and Xander Hartland were best.

The Swans are coached by Hayden Dalitz and Brodie Tonkin.

A rematch of the ’24 grand finalists and this season’s top teams in Hay and Ultima highlights next Saturday’s round 13 action.

The Lions and Kangaroos will play in Hay from 2.25pm.

Murrabit will be on home turf against Wandella in the clash of the Blues and Bombers.

Moulamein hosts Macorna in a match between the Swans and Tigers.
