Navies, Lions play for ‘Respect’ Cup in Charlton

THE Mount Of Prevention ‘Respect’ Cup will be played for by Charlton and Calder United in Saturday’s 14th round in Goldacres North Central senior footy.

It’s more than premiership points to be won as the Navies and Lions play at Charlton Park from 2.30pm.

When these clubs met in round seven it was the Lions who roared in 160-20 win at Nullawil.

Formed by the amalgamation of Nullawil and Wycheproof-Narraport, Calder United has marked its debut season with a 10-3 record and is second on the ladder.

It’s been a tough run for the Mitch Collins-coached Charlton, but a 4-9 record is a vast improvement on last season’s 1-15 tally.

There will be plenty of key match-ups for Charlton, especially in defence.

The Navies named Bailey Hooper-Dixon at full-back to take on Jack Exell.

Jackson Zagame is a possible opponent for Lions co-coach Jordan Humphreys, and Jed Thompson against Mitch Farmer.

In the on-ball duels Charlton has Ben Lanyon, Ben Xiriha and Rhys Thompson to take on Matt Trzeciak, Steven Kennedy and Zane Keighran.

A Charlton attack led by Billy Sexton, Kris Clifford and Mason Heenan faces Oscar Madden, Josh Walsh and Boe Bish.

The Lions have multiple premiership-winning coach Darryl Wilson as non-playing co-coach.

The fourth-placed Boort takes on fifth-placed Wedderburn at Boort Park.

In round seven the Dale Cameron-coached Boort won at Wedderburn’s Donaldson Park by five points.

Win this contest and Boort is assured of playing finals.

Key players for Boort include centreman Jayden Dick, ruckman Peter Barbopoulos, Jhye Baddeley-Kelly, Keiren Wilson, Kayne Rutley and Will Perryman.

The Tom Metherell-coached Redbacks will look for big games from the likes of Zach Pallpratt, Jackson and Mitch McEwen, Mitch Jensen, Oscar Holt, Danny Benaim and Hamish Lockhart.

Donald will be on home turf against Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers.

It’s likely to be another hectic afternoon for Donald’s defenders Dyson Bell-Warren, coach Daniel Pearce, Glenn Meulendkys and Josh Smulders.

A formidable attack for the SLN Tigers includes Lachy McClelland, Jai Wright, Max Cahoon and Chase Tait.

Royals’ on-ballers Seth Pearse, George Morgan and Thomas Reekle will be up against Ryan O’Sullivan, Tigers’ co-coach Bryce Delmenico and Cruz O’Sullivan.

Donald will look to Ben, Brent and Sam Arho to set up or finish off goalscoring chances.

The SLN defence is led by Kane Donnan, Jack Poulton, Brodie Adcock and co-coach Billy McInnes.

Donald will be without Josh Talty who was given a one-match penalty after an early guilty plea for striking.

It’s the Saints against the Bulls as St Arnaud hosts Birchip-Watchem at Lord Nelson Park.

The Saints squad coached by Scott Driscoll includes Jackson Needs, Kurtis Torney, Bailey and Harley Durward, Max Hungerford, Sam Penfold and Matthew Goode.

The Ash Connick-coached Birchip-Watchem is showing no signs of slowing down in its pursuit of premiership glory.

The Bulls have a 13-nil record following last Saturday’s win against Boort in Birchip by 71 points.

Birchip-Watchem’s squad includes full-forward Ben Edwards, Ben Lakin, Nicholas Rippon, Dale Hinkley, Austin Dean, Tom Gibson, Rhona Conboy and ruckman Hamish Hosking.
