GOLDEN Square has set up another grand final showdown with Castlemaine in the Champions IGA-backed CVFL senior women’s footy competition.
Just as they did last September, Castlemaine and Golden Square will meet in this Friday’s grand final at Queen Elizabeth Oval in Bendigo’s View Street from 7.30pm.
The Bulldogs won last Friday night’s preliminary final against Eaglehawk on the QEO turf by nine points.
Defences were well on top in the first half.
Golden Square led seven-nil at quarter-time, but the Hawks struck back to score 1.1 as it kept the blue and gold scoreless in the second term.
By half-time it was seven-all.
In the third quarter the Carly Geary and Bec McLay-coached Golden Square scored two goals.
By the last change the Bulldogs were in front, 20-7.
The Molly Metcalf-coached Eaglehawk did plenty of attacking in the final quarter.
As the Two Blues posted four behinds they kept Golden Square scoreless.
By the final siren the Bulldogs led 20-11.
Goalkickers for Golden Square were Kate Douglass, Bella Eddy and Sarah Mannes.
The Hawks’ sole goalkicker was Samantha Johnston.
Best for Golden Square were Lauren Suleiman, Sarah Mannes, Mackenzie Bickley, Kate Douglass, Gabby Drage and Taylah Moore.
Eaglehawk’s best were Lexie Moss, Lucy El Hage, Caitlin Evans, Samantha Johnston, Sienna Hobbs and Lily Jenkins.
The Bulldogs will now try to deny Castlemaine a fourth consecutive premiership.
The Jordan Cochrane-coached Magpies have won this season’s contests with Golden Square by 54, 26 and 35 points.
Most recent meeting between the grand finalists was the second semi-final at Castlemaine’s Camp Reserve.
The Magpies won 62-27 as Jemma Finning, Maeve Tupper, Eillish Cumming and Grace Brady were best.
The CVFL’s grand final night on Friday at the QEO kicks off at 5.30pm when Woorinen takes on Sandhurst in the under-18 girls match.
A hot run of form by Sandhurst kept rolling as the maroon and blue marked a 43-7 victory against Golden Square in last Friday night’s preliminary final.
The Dragons raced to a 19-nil lead by quarter-time and were up 27-nil by the long break.
Sandhurst’s ferocity at the contest did not ease up.
The maroon and blue scored 2.3 in the third as the Bulldogs posted a behind.
Lucy Johansen goaled for Golden Square in the last, but it was Sandhurst which celebrated a 43-7 win.
Leni Brown led the Sandhurst attack on three goals as Ellie Bellenger, Milla Franklin and Chloe Tweed were also on target.
Best for Sandhurst were Phoebe Henderson, Milla Franklin, Leni Brown, Mia Maxted, Alannah Prowse and Ava Franklin.
Lucy Gilbee, Ella Gourley, Lucy Johansen, Gemma McPhee, Lily Mansfield and Makayla Roberts played well for Golden Square.
The Dragons kicked off their finals campaign by winning the first semi-final against Winslow Constructors Demons at Castlemaine’s Camp Reserve by 99 points.
On the same day it was Woorinen which scored a 45-8 win against Golden Square in the second semi.
An 11-1 run meant Woorinen finished the home-and-away series on top spot.
Sole defeat for the Tigers was in round 18 when Sandhurst surged to a 27-18 victory against the yellow and black at Queen Elizabeth Oval.
Finals will be played this Friday at QEO.
