Heathcote wins another close duel with Hawks

HEATHCOTE won another closely-fought contest with Harlowe Huntly Hawks in Saturday’s 12th round in Agnico Eagle Fosterville Gold Mine Heathcote DFNL senior footy.

The Saints and Hawks clash was at Pigeon Park in Heathcote’s Barrack Reserve.

Goalkicking accuracy was superb in the first quarter as Heathcote scored 7.0 and the Hawks were 4.0 at the break.

Huntly hit back to win the second term, 25-19.

A highly entertaining first hour ended with the Saints leading 61-49.

Goals were at a premium in the second half.

Heathcote added four behinds in the third term as Huntly scored two behinds.

The Hawks lifted their play to win the final quarter, 15-6, but it was Heathcote which clung on for a 71-66 victory.

Heathcote’s attack was led by Liam Jacques and Dylan Johnstone on three goals each as Stefan Rasinac slotted two.

Hawks’ gun forward Sam Dunstan was in great form as he kicked seven goals.

Best for the Saints were Justin Bateson, Stefan Rasinac, Dillon Williams, Hugh Freckleton, Daniel Johnstone and Will Tobin.

Huntly’s best were key defender Will Lee, Sam Dunstan, Riley Beard, Deacon Wheelhouse, Steve Kairn and Nic Roberts.

When these clubs met in round three it was the Saints who won 70-64 at Huntly’s Strauch Reserve.

A win-loss tally of six-three and a draw as a Heathcote team coached by Andrew Saladino, non-playing, and Liam Jacques, playing, in fourth place.

The Hamish Morcom-coached Hawks are seventh on 12 points and now three wins behind the fifth-placed Lockington Bamawm United.

Colbinabbin scored a 33-point win at White Hills.

The Linton Jacobs-coached Grasshoppers were up 19-12 at quarter-time and then slammed on six goals as the Demons added five behinds in the second term.

White Hills fought back to win term three, 23-17.

As Colbinabbin added 3.6 in the last the Demons slotted four straight goals.

Alex Carr was a driving force for the Grasshoppers as he finished with seven goals and Brandyn Grenfell kicked four goals in a 97-64 victory.

The White Hills attack was led by Tom Conlan, Lachlan Martin and Jake Thompson with two goals each.

Best for Colbinabbin were Jai Carn, Alex Carr, Toby Howlett, Tanner Nally, Josh Smithson and Charlie Ryan.

Patrick Crawford, Jack Lawton, Doolan Nihill, Liam Monaghan, Mitch Dole and Ben Irvine were best for a White Hills team coached by Brad McConnell and Lachie Sawyer.

Reigning premier Mount Pleasant unveiled its latest recruit, Nathan Kay in its clash with Lockington Bamawm United in Toolleen.

After playing seven matches with South Bendigo this season, Kay joined Mounts early last week.

A coach of Elmore the previous two seasons, Kay slotted in to a mid/forward role for the Blues.

Stung by a seven-goal loss at Huntly the previous round, Mount Pleasant led 24-12 at quarter-time against the LBU Cats.

The Blues then won the second term, 31-14.

The Jayden Howe-coached LBU kept working hard, but Mounts was able to control a lot of the play.

After winning the third term, 20-12, Mount Pleasant then scored three goals in the last as LBU added three behinds.

The Blues led 97-41 at the final siren.

Jack Hickman, Nathan Kay, Jaxson Nihill and Ben Weightman all kicked two goals for the Josh Hann and Cam Carter-coached Blues.

LBU’s leading goalkicker was Jesse Collins with two.

Gun defender and co-captain William Wallace was best afield for the Blues as Jaxson Nihill, Joel Wharton, Nathan Kay, Bryce Hinneberg and Jack Hickman all played well.

Best for LBU were Jesse Collins, Marcus Angove, Tyler Phillips, Joseph Wolfe, Jack O’Callaghan and Nick Smart.

North Bendigo’s consistency across four quarters was superb in a 143-56 victory at home against Elmore at Bendigo Club Oval in Atkins Street.

The Bulldogs scored six goals in the first quarter, four in the second, and then six majors in the third and fourth term.

As it has done in several matches this season, North Bendigo again finished strongly as it kicked a match 6.5 in the last quarter.

Jordan Ford led the attack on five goals as Cody Riddick kicked four and co-coach Ryan Hartley added three.

A list of 10 goalkickers for North Bendigo included Noah Filo being on target in his first senior match.

It was a big day for the Filo family as Noah was watched by his father, Derrick a legend across more than 400 matches in the Bendigo FNL with Castlemaine, Kyneton, Kangaroo Flat and Eaglehawk.

Elmore’s team included Derrick’s nephew, Matt playing in the centre.

Lachie Munro kicked two goals for the Bloods.

Best for the Bulldogs were Cody Riddick, ruckman Jordan Hargreaves, Bailey Cain, Ryan Hartley, Billy Robertson and Riley Paetow.

North Bendigo has Rob Bennett as non-playing co-coach.

The Bloods’ best were Rhys Holmberg, Matt Gilmour, Hayden Trewick, Lachlan Giffin, Matt Filo and Kynan Sharpe.

Elmore is coached by Luke Freeman.

Leitchville Gunbower had the bye.

In the netball……ELMORE fought for a one-goal victory on North Bendigo’s court in Saturday’s 12th round of A-grade netball in the Agnico Eagle Fosterville Gold Mine Heathcote DFNL season.

A 37-36 victory for Elmore at Bendigo Club Oval in Atkins Street lifted the Bloods to the sixth rung.

The Adam Boldiston-coached Elmore played inspired netball in a contest where defences ruled.

At the final whistle Elmore led 37-36.

Defeat meant the Kiralee Kinder-coached North Bendigo is now just two points clear of the fifth-placed Harlowe Huntly Hawks.

Long-time rivals White Hills and Colbinabbin met on the White Hills court in Scott Street.

The Elley Lawton-coached Demons were determined to turn up the heat against the reigning premier.

Colbinabbin’s slick passing from mid-court to a formidable goaling combination proved too much for the red and black.

By the final siren  the Jen McIntyre-coached Colbinabbin led 80-36.

The Harlowe Huntly Hawks marked a successful trek to Pigeon Park in Heathcote’s Barrack Reserve.

A Hawks’ line-up jointly coached by Kym Bell and Ash Sherlock surged to a 56-36 victory against the Saints.

The Brooke Price-coached Heathcote dropped to the ninth rung on the ladder.

Mount Pleasant almost reached the century mark in its clash with Lockington Bamawm United in Toolleen.

The Anthea McCleary-coached Blues won 94-34.

Mounts will have gained plenty of confidence leading into next Saturday’s big clash at home on Colbinabbin’s court.

It was another tough hit-out for the Stacy Bacon-coached LBU  Cats.

Leitchville Gunbower had the bye.
