BALLARAT capitalised on home-ground advantage and the wet conditions at Alfredton to mark a 26-point victory against the Champions IGA-backed CVFL senior women’s footy team on Saturday.
After a dominant first quarter, Ballarat led 21-6 in the clash of the Goldfields rivals.
The hosts added 1.4 in the second and kept CV scoreless.
Ballarat led 37-7 going into the final quarter.
CV worked hard to win the last, 6-2, but it was Ballarat which celebrated a 39-13 victory.
Best for the CVFL were Teagan Ainslie from Wedge-Tailed Eagles, Golden Square’s Taylah Moore, Sasha Pearce from White hills, Eaglehawk’s Lucy El Hage, Castlemaine’s Eillish Cumming and Golden Square’s Gemma Roberts.
Co-coach of the CVFL, Eloise Gretgrix said Ballarat’s play at stoppages was a key factor.
The CVFL team was co-coached by Eloise Gretgrix and Leigh Stevens.
It was a thrilling finish to the under-18 girls match.
CVFL scored the first two goals of the contest, but it was Ballarat which fought back to hold an eight-point lead going into the final term.
After being goalless in the second and third quarters, CV broke the deadlock to turn the heat up.
When the siren sounded it was Ballarat which led 3.5 (23) to 3.4 (22).
Best for the Central Victoria FL were Storm’s Scarlett Ward, Eaglehawk’s Charlise McQueen, Storm’s Akiva Morrissey, Maddison Collard from White Hills, Eaglehawk’s Kyah Spiteri and Jessica Cox.
The CVFL resumes next Sunday.
It’s Indigenous Round for the senior women’s teams.
Match of the day will be Castlemaine against Golden Square at The Railway Hotel Oval in Castlemaine’s Camp Reserve from 1pm.
It may be a grand final prelude as second takes on first.
The Darren Walsh-coached Golden Square is unbeaten since a first-round loss on Castlemaine’s ground.
A Castlemaine team coached by Jordan Cochrane is chasing a fourth consecutive premiership.
Three other matches will start at 1pm on Sunday.
Sandhurst takes on Marong at Queen Elizabeth Oval.
Bendigo Thunder faces Eaglehawk at Weeroona Oval.
White Hills hosts Wedge-Tailed Eagles at the Scott Street ground.
Round 10 in the CVFL under-18 girls competition on Sunday features the showdown between Storm and Woorinen at Triple M Park in Strathfieldsaye’s Tannery Lane from 11am.
The second-placed Storm, 8-1, will be aiming to break the unbeaten run by the ladder-leading Tigers.
Four other clashes will start at 11am.
Sandhurst tackles Marong at Queen Elizabeth Oval.
White Hills faces Echuca United in the Demons’ den in Scott Street.
Castlemaine takes on Golden Square at Camp Reserve.
Kangaroo Flat will play Eaglehawk at Bendigo Mazda Oval in Dower Park.
