Castlemaine’s young guns feature in top of ladder showdown
CASTLEMAINE’S rising stars featured in a top of the ladder clash with Maryborough in the weekend’s 12th round of the Bendigo Bank Bendigo Junior Football League season.
The all-Magpies clash was in the under-16 reserves, division one competition at Maryborough’s Princes Park.
Castlemaine went into the match on a win-loss tally of 6-4 to be second in a premiership race led by Maryborough on 7-3.
The Castlemaine team worked hard to be within two points at three quarter-time, but it was Maryborough which scored 4.3 to 3.1 in the last to claim a 52-42 victory.
Castlemaine’s attack was led by Alton Bracken on two goals.
Best for Castlemaine were Dallas Keogh-Frankling, Alton Bracken, Caspian Lord, Sam Moran, Jacob Honeychurch and Jeremy Barnes.
Despite a three-goal defeat on Huntly’s turf at Strauch Reserve, Castlemaine holds fourth place on the under-14 reserves, division one ladder.
The Magpies have 22 points from a season record of five wins, six losses and a draw.
The draw was against the fifth-placed Strathfieldsaye which has a 5-5 record.
In Sunday’s play, Castlemaine led 47-44 at three quarter-time of the under-14 reserves, division one clash on the Hawks’ ground.
Huntly scored 4.3 to a goal in the last term to win 71-53.
Levi Bruce kicked three goals for the Magpies as Oscar Giddings added two.
Castlemaine’s best were Oscar Giddings, Harper Kneebone, Magnus Britton, Oliver Britt, Dylan Goddard and Alex Welch.
In the under-16 Girls competition, Castlemaine played on Strathfieldsaye Storm’s ground at Triple M Park in Tannery Lane.
Tegan Barry and Ainsley Taft kicked goals for the Magpies as Storm won 50-15.
Best for Castlemaine were Ainsley Taft, Chloe Drew, Keisha Legg, Samantha Brasher, Abbey Carr and Tegan Barry.
The Magpies’ under-12B team had the bye.
