BJFL Round 15 Review | Smaller clubs mark big victories

THE smaller clubs in the IGA-backed Bendigo Junior Football League continue to shine in the 2023 season.

In last weekend’s play, Mount Pleasant, Heathcote, North Bendigo, Lockington Bamawm United, and Woorinen were to the fore in various age groups.

Although it did not score a goal, Mount Pleasant’s tally of 12 behinds was enough to clinch victory in the under-12 girls’ match with White Hills.

The Blues were on 0.12 as the Demons scored 1.4 (10) at Fur Life Oval in Golden Square’s Wade Street.

Woorinen Tigers were in top form at home in the under-18 girls’ match against Eaglehawk.

The Tigers led 57-9 at half-time and then scored 5.10 to nil in the second half for a 97-9 victory.

Woorinen captain Brydi Lewis kicked three goals as Issy Boulton, Kobe Davison, Aylah McLean and Sophie McClelland chipped in with two each.

Best for the Tigers were Gaby Sanford, Nevaeh Roberts, Emilie Ward, Jenna Bannam, Kobe Davison and Lanie Somerville.

Heathcote dominated the under-12C match against St Monica’s at Pigeon Park in Heathcote’s Barrack Reserve.

The Saints led 31-nil at half-time and went on to win 11.8 (74) to 2.0 (12).

Ethan Longson, Isaac Pianta-Cook and Cailen Ruck all kicked two goals for Heathcote.

Best for the Saints were Cailen Ruck, Jake Aquilina, James Lawlor, Isaac Pianta-Cook, Josh Vanzin and Cooper Mitchell.

North Bendigo marked a 13-goal win against Eaglehawk Two Blues in the under-12D match at North Bendigo’s Atkins Street.

The Bulldogs racked up goal tallies of four, three, three and five per quarter in a 101-13 result.

Baiiden Benbow kicked five goals in a best afield performance for the Bulldogs.

Other multiple goalkickers were Jason Kerr, Ethan Miller, Riley Page and Riley Thompson, two.

The Bulldogs’ best were Baiiden Benbow, Riley Page, Ruby Shepherd, Ethan Miller, Aiden West and Kruz Randall.

The ladder-leading Lockington Bamawm United Cats won the under-16 reserves, division two match against Maiden Gully YCW.

The LBU Cats led 40-25 at three quarter-time of the match at Marist College Bendigo in Maiden Gully.

The Cats added 5.5 to a point in the last for a 75-26 victory.

James Brentnall, Harrison Condliffe and Charlie Mundie kicked two goals each for LBU.

Best for the Cats were James Brentnall, Mitch Munro, Patrick Keele, Malik Day, Mitchell Scurrah and Harrison Keele.
