BJFL Week 12 Review | Marong Panthers roar to first win of season

THE cubs from Marong Panthers marked some fine performances across week 12 in the IGA-backed Bendigo Junior Football League season.

A high for Marong was a breakthrough victory for the under-16 reserves, division two team.

After a run of 10 consecutive defeats, Marong dominated Sunday’s match against White Hills at Winslow Constructors Oval in Scott Street, White Hills.

The Panthers led 14-1 at quarter-time and then scored 6.4 to 1.2 in the second term.

A 45-point lead at the long break was back to 38 after the Demons won the third term, 21-14.

Marong hit back to add 3.3 to 1.2 in the last to complete an 89-38 victory.

The Panthers’ attack was led by Seth Miller, three; Harry Arnett and Brodie Hale, two.

Other goalkickers included John Bradley and Mitchell Pickering.

Best for Marong were Seth Miller, Brodie Hale, Deqlan Radford, John Bradley and Harry Arnett.

It was a great contest between Marong and Strathfieldsaye in the under-14 reserves, division one match at Enterprise Oval in Strathfieldsaye’s Tannery Lane.

Storm surged to a 20-6 lead by quarter-time before Marong hit back to score 3.6 to 1.1 in the second.

A closely-fought third term went Strathfieldsaye’s way, 18-13.

Although Marong won the last quarter, 20-19, Storm took the premiership points in a 64-63 result.

The Panthers’ attack was led by Cooper Bray and William Hope on two goals apiece.

Marong also had Harry Allison, Nattai Carter, Ryan Marwood, Jack Miller and Max O’Donnell on target.

In the under-12C competition, Marong fell just short against St Monica’s at Marong’s Malone Park.

The Panthers led 6-5 at half-time before the Roos scored 1.1 to a point in the third term.

Marong won the last, 1.2 to a goal, but St Monica’s held on for an 18-15 victory.

Jack Atkinson and Ryan Robertson goaled for the Panthers.

Best for Marong were Jack Metherell, Tyler Pearce, Miller Ferguson, Nattai Carter, Jackson Cross and Axel Crauth.

Marong also fields teams in the under-12 girls and under-14 girls competitions.

The Panthers played Eaglehawk in the under-12 girls match on Friday night at Winslow Constructors Oval in White Hills.

The Hawks led 38-15 at half-time.

It was a closely-fought second half in which both teams scored 2.1.

At the final siren, Eaglehawk led 51-28.

Taylah Dudderidge kicked two goals for Marong as Ruby Richards and Alyssa Wardell were also on target.

Best for the Panthers were Ruby Richards, Georgia Hope, Sophie Bourke and Ruby Webster.

Marong played Kangaroo Flat in the under-14 girls match on Sunday at Kangaroo Flat’s Dower Park.

The Roos led 11-10 at half-time and then scored 1.6 to nil in the third.

Kangaroo Flat added another goal in the last as Marong scored four behinds.

At the final siren the Roos led 29-14.

Laila Doye goaled for Marong.

Best for the Panthers were Olive Rogers, El Taylor, Laila Doye, Ashleigh Medhurst and Allison Ralton.
