BJFL Week 14 Review | Closely-fought matches in many grades

THERE were many closely-fought matches across the weekend as the IGA-backed Bendigo Junior Football League marked its 14th week.

It was a one-point thriller between Strathfieldsaye and Golden Square in the under-16 seniors match played on Sunday at Fur Life Oval in Golden Square’s Wade Street.

The Bulldogs led 20-13 at quarter-time, 41-31 at half-time, and 49-34 going into the last term.

Storm surged back to the contest and hit the front as it scored 3.5 to 1.1 in the last quarter.

At the final siren, Strathfieldsaye led 8.9 (57) to 8.8 (56).

Storm’s attack was led by Phoenix Gordon, four goals; Tye Allan and Luke Matheson, two.

Seth Cooke-Kingston ruled Square’s forward line with a team-high four goals/

Best for Strathfieldsaye were Tye Allan, Fletch Watchman, Phoenix Gordon, Lachlan Hargreaves, Sam Gibson and Brock Greenwood.

Charlie Mortimer, Ryan Brown, Xavier Grant, Josh Kelly, Bailey Warfe and Jeremy Corr were best for the Bulldogs.

Just five points separated Rochester and Castlemaine at the end of the under-16 seniors match played on Sunday at Kangaroo Flat’s Dower Park.

The Rochester Tigers led 60-40 at three quarter-time.

Castlemaine charged home to score 4.3 in the last, but the Tigers’ tally of two goals was enough to clinch a 72-67 victory.

Rochester’s attack was led by captain Lachlan Joyce and Jimmy Otto, three goals; and Harrison Keating, two.

Multiple goalkickers for Castlemaine were Chaz Holman, six; and co-captain Mitchell McKnight, two.

Best for Rochester were Lachlan Joyce, Rory Hayes, Jordy Rasmussen, Harrison Keating, Oliver Williams and Angus Ferguson.

Nick Lord, Mitchell McKnight, Chaz Holman, Ben Jardine, Saxon Sieber-Hogg and Gabriel O’Sullivan played well for the Magpies.

In the under-16 girls competition, Strathfieldsaye marked a 15-point win against Golden  Square at Triple M Park in Strathfieldsaye’s Tannery Lane.

Golden Square led 8-7 at quarter-time before Storm scored two goals and kept the visitors scoreless in the second.

Both teams goaled in the third.

At the final siren, Storm led 30-15.

Evie Nuttall kicked two goals for Strathfieldsaye as Alysha Boyd and captain Tessa Skipper were on target.

Ella Meharry and Evelyn Williams goaled for Golden Square.

Storm’s best were Maddie Dunn, Alysha Boyd, Evie Nuttall, Scarlett Ward, Sophie Ryan and Tessa Skipper.

Gemma McPhee, Mieka Szakal, Lucy Johnansen, Luci Kornmann, Tahlee Gray and Evelyn Williams played well for the blue and gold.
