BJFL Week 3 Review | Hawks fly high in many matches

EAGLEHAWK’S rising stars soared high in many matches across the third weekend of the Bendigo Bank Bendigo Junior Football League season.

It was an important weekend for the BJFL as it took part in Community Umpiring Week.

Without the umpires there would be no matches.

More than 70 matches were played across Friday to Sunday as the BJFL runs under-9, under-10, under-12, under-14, under-16 and under-18 competitions.

Play covers a wide area as venues included Rochester’s Windridge Oval, Maryborough’s Princes Park, Woorinen Recreation Reserve, Castlemaine’s Wesley Hill, and Heathcote’s Barrack Reserve.

In the under-12 girls’ competition, Eaglehawk took on St Therese’s on Friday night at Epsom-Huntly Reserve.

The match ended in a 105-7 win for the St Therese’s Sharks.

Eaglehawk played a strong Sandhurst team in the under-14 Girls’ match at Ewing Park on Sunday.

Best for Eaglehawk were Zoe Hodgskiss, Tahlia Thorpe, Macey Scoble, Sezin Lees, Ella Jefferis and Bobbie Fasham.

Eaglehawk had a bye in the under-18 Girls’ competition.

It was third week of grading for under-12 Mixed, under-14 Mixed, and under-16 Boys.

Eaglehawk Two Blues played Maiden Gully YCW (3) in an under-12 Mixed match at Marist College Bendigo in Maiden Gully.

The Hawks won a closely-fought contest with the Two Blues, 59-43.

Eaglehawk’s attack was led by Callum O’Brien and Peter Smith on two goals.

Best for the Two Blues were Koby Shelton, Jace Dea, Nash Ferrie, Tyson McMahon, Whil Goulden and Callum O’Brien.

Eaglehawk Hawks scored 18 goals in their under-12 match against South Bendigo (2) at California Gully.

George Hillard kicked four goals as Zachariah Dove and Jack Hocking added three.

Best for the Borough were Elijah Penno, Hunter Bourke, Jake Bumpstead, Ku Law Saw, Rhys Kidd White, and Xavier Rayner.

Eaglehawk Eagles scored seven goals in the first term on the way to an 84-19 win against Marong in another under-12 match at California Gully.

Co-captains Chace Powley and Taiglan Turton kicked four and two goals.

Best for Eaglehawk were Chase Powley, Wynn Jackson, Logan Cunningham, Ryker Leech, Ethan Castle and Bohdi Hunt.

The Hawks and Magpies met in an under-14 grading match at Castlemaine’s Camp Reserve.

Eaglehawk led 56-28 at half-time and went on to win 108-55.

Xavier Stone put in a superb performance to kick seven goals for the Hawks as Taj Ferguson and Corey Larson added two each.

Best for Eaglehawk were Alex Gill, Xavier Stone, Jack Frankel, Cashius Burke, Zac Farrow and Taj Ferguson.

At under-16 level, Eaglehawk headed west to Maryborough’s Princes Park.

The Magpies led 45-14 at quarter-time.

From there it was an even contest as Maryborough scored 5.13 in the next three quarters and Eaglehawk added 6.5.

Maysen Pettersen kicked two goals for the Two Blues as James Coates-Moore, William Malone, Max Miller, Isaiah Phillips-Adams, Anderson Pithie and Tyson Taylor added one each.

Best for Eaglehawk were Max Miller, Tyson Taylor, Anderson Pithie, William Malone, Lennox Barker and Kobi MacDonald.
