CASTLEMAINE ended Golden Square’s unbeaten run in Sunday’s 13th round in Champions IGA-backed CVFL senior women’s footy.
The Jordan Cochrane-coached Castlemaine faced a huge challenge as the league’s top two met at The Railway Hotel Oval in Castlemaine’s Camp Reserve.
After being beaten at Castlemaine in the opening round, Golden Square had gone on an 11-match winning streak.
Match of the day in Indigenous Round may well have been a grand final prelude as last season’s grand finalists met again.
It was eight-all at quarter-time before the Magpies won the second, 6-1.
Quarter three was to prove decisive as Castlemaine scored 2.2 and kept the Bulldogs to a goal.
A 13-point buffer for the Magpies going into the last grew to be 16 by the final siren as Castlemaine soared to a 40-24 victory.
Castlemaine captain Tiahna Cochrane kicked two goals as Eloise Gretgrix, Paynton Jolliffe and Maeve Tupper were also on target.
Goalkickers for Golden Square were Gabby Drage, Taylah Moore and Gemma Roberts.
Best for Castlemaine were Tiahna Cochrane, Alice D’Arcy, Jemma Finning, Aisling and Maeve Tupper, and Georgia Gribble.
Lauren Knight, Lily Mansfield, Ava Barker, Taylah Moore, Ruby Demeo and Tania Kerrison were best for the Darren Walsh-coached Golden Square.
Eaglehawk coach Molly Metcalf and forward Kelly Mensforth marked their 250th and 200th games with a big win against Bendigo Thunder at Weeroona Oval.
A tally of 35 scoring shots was a sign of the Hawks’ dominance in an 85-1 result.
Molly Metcalf led the Two Blues’ attack on three goals as Monique Gavriliadis, Kelly Mensforth and Lilly Stevenson slotted two each.
Best for Eaglehawk were Monique Gavriliadis, Lexie Moss, Grace Edlin, Kelly Mensforth, Molly Metcalf and Lilly Stevenson.
Stacey Barbagallo, Alex Marshall, Ngaire Harlan, Jasmine Alcon and Archie Mclachlan were best for the Mick McInnes-coached Thunder.
The Wedge-Tailed Eagles soared to a 41-13 victory on the White Hills ground in Scott Street.
A closely-fought opening quarter went the Eagles way, 12-6.
The WTE team led 20-7 by the long break and 30-13 going into the final term.
There were no multiple goalkickers for either team.
Best for the Eagles were Teagan Ainslie, Demi Henderson, Taya Barnett, Alicia Chadwick, Ayesha Nicholson and Rebecca Evans.
Tracey Anderson, Kadeisha Smith, Ella Henery, Holly Smith, Chelsea Edwards and Julia Greenhalf were best for White Hills.
The Phil Hawkes-coached Eagles are perched on the ladder’s fourth rung, but locked on 24 points with Eaglehawk and White Hills.
The Demons are jointly coached by Sharni Barker and Allara Jackson.
Details from the Sandhurst and Marong match scheduled for Queen Elizabeth Oval were not supplied.

Round 10 in the Champions IGA-backed CVFL under-18 girls footy competition was played on Sunday.
Match of the day was at Triple M Park in Strathfieldsaye’s Tannery Lane where Storm took on the unbeaten Woorinen.
It was second against first.
Woorinen led five-nil at quarter-time and then scored three goals in the second to be up 25-1 at the long break.
Storm worked hard to win term three, 13-6, but it was the Tigers who ran out 37-22 winners.
The Tigers’ attack was led by Prue O’Sullivan on three goals.
Alysha Boyd kicked two goals for Storm.
Woorinen’s best were Charli Conway, Eva Coffey, Ruby Butler, Chloe Lovell, Carly Shepherd and Stella Bibby.
Storm’s best were Dempsey McDonnell, Jordan O’Bree, Scarlett Ward, Isabella Stevens, Alysha Boyd and Akiva Morrissey.
At the Queen Elizabeth Oval it was Sandhurst against Marong.
The Marong line-up led 14-7 at quarter-time and 33-14 by the long break.
As the Panthers added 2.2 in the second half they kept Sandhurst scoreless to record a 47-14 victory.
The Panthers’ attack was led by Molly Austin, Phoebe England and Alyssa Wardell on two goals each.
Ellie Bellenger and Etta Place were on target for the maroon and blue.
Marong’s best were Alyssa Wardell, Phoebe England, Allie Grant, Emma O’Toole, Molly Austin and El Taylor.
Macey Pinner, Elke Fletcher, Tahlee Gray, Alannah Prowse, Etta Place and Ellie Bellenger played well for Sandhurst.
The Echuca United Eagles soared to a 71-27 victory at White Hills.
A brilliant first quarter by Echuca United in which it scored 4.6 and kept the Demons to a tally of 1.1 was followed by two goals in quarters two, three and four.
Jada Dennis led the Eagles attack on three goals as Willow Clark and Sage Dennis slotted two each.
Jordi Cain, Ruby Morgan and Isabella Nathan joined in Echuca United’s goals run.
The Demons’ goalkickers were Maddison Collard and Sophie O’Connell on two each.
Best for the Eagles were Isabella Nathan, Ruby Morgan, Jada Dennis, Harper Delamare, Sage Dennis and Ava Plattfuss.
Reagan Wirken, Louise Khodja, Maddison Collard, Sophie O’Connell and Elly Pickering played well for White Hills.
The Castlemaine Magpies swopped for a 55-21 win in their nest at Camp Reserve against Golden Square.
Castlemaine led 33-7 at half-time, but Golden Square fought back well to win the third term, 13-3.
Just 16 points separated the teams going into the final quarter.
The Magpies added 3.1 in the last to complete a 34-point triumph.
Ava Bartlett capped a great match with five goals as Kate Batchelor booted two and Rhani Evans another.
Goalkickers for the Bulldogs were Alyssa Brew, Jayde Chappel and Charlize Humme.
Castlemaine’s best were Kate Batchelor, Amelia Brown, Miharo WiHare, Ava Bartlett, Kirah Muscat and Piper Marshall.
Jayde Chappel, Lucy Johansen, Sihanna Carter, Evelyn Williams, Poppy Eaton and Alyssa Brew played well for the blue and gold.
Kangaroo Flat could not halt Eaglehawk charging to a 70-point win on the Kangaroos’ ground at Bendigo Mazda Oval in Dower Park.
The Hawks led 24-nil at quarter-time and 34-7 by the long break.
As the Two Blues added 4.7 in the third they kept the Kangaroos scoreless.
The final term went the Hawks’ way, 19-7.
Leading goalkicker for Eaglehawk was Zoe Hodgskiss on four as Alexandra Jones, Darcy Martin, Charlise McQueen, Macey Scoble, Rima Shanley and Tahlia Thorpe were also on target.
Matilda Rose kicked both of Kangaroo Flat’s goals.
Best for the Two Blues were Olivia Bluemore, Darcy Martin, Rima Shanley, Charlise McQueen, Zoe Hodgskiss and Kyah Spiteri.
Kangaroo Flat’s best were Melanie White, Mackenna Lindrea, Emily Ahearn, Abigail Sendy, Alyssa Bertuch and Eheh Soe.

Four matches on Sunday will start at 11am.
Woorinen will be at home against Marong.
White Hills and Storm meet in the Demons’ den in Scott Street.
Golden Square faces Sandhurst at Gourmet Pantry Oval in Golden Square’s Wade Street.
