Castlemaine kicks off round against Sandhurst

AFTER waiting an extra week to rebound from defeat, Castlemaine takes on Sandhurst in Friday night’s start to round six in the Champions IGA-backed CVFL senior women’s footy competition.

The Magpies and Dragons will play at The Railway Hotel Oval in Castlemaine’s Camp Reserve from 7.30pm.

Stung by an eight-point loss at Golden Square in round four, Castlemaine cooled its heels last weekend as Marong forfeited last Friday night’s match on the Magpies’ turf.

Sandhurst will be determined to hit back from a 67-3 loss to Golden Square.

A talented Castlemaine team coached by Jordan Cochrane includes Taylah Sartori, Paynton Jolliffe, Eillish Cumming, Tiahna Cochrane and Marguerita Murphy.

A win-loss tally of three-two has the Liam Ireland and Andrew Saladino-coached Sandhurst in fifth place.

The Dragons’ squad includes Isabella Ayre, Grace and Ruby Campbell, Milla Franklin, Taylah Klemm, Chloe Naughton and Chloe Swatton.

Three matches will be played on Mother’s Day from 1pm.

Wedge-Tailed Eagles will be back at Woodend’s Racecourse Reserve to play White Hills.

The Phil Hawkes-coached Eagles will be fired up after a nine-point loss at home to Eaglehawk last Sunday.

Key match-ups include Eagles co-captain Ayesha Nicholson in the centre against Maiya Pearce, Kareena Jacobsen-Logan in attack against Acacia Edwards,  and Belinda Hateley in the ruck contests opposed to Sasha Pearce.

Other players to watch for WTE include Natalie Korinfsky, Emma Williams and Lucy Lenius.

The Demons scored a 106-point win at home against Bendigo Thunder last Sunday.

A White Hills team jointly coached by Sharni Barker and Allara Jackson includes Kara Kane, Tracey Anderson, Hannah Ripper and Nadia Peebles.

The in-form Golden Square returns to Gourmet Pantry Oval in Wade Street to play Marong.

A win-loss tally of four-one has put the Darren Walsh-coached Golden Square on the ladder’s second rung.

Best for Golden Square in its latest win against Sandhurst were Ava Barker, Taylah Moore, Carly Geary and Dani Jeffery.

Marong has forfeited its past two matches against White Hills and Castlemaine.

Most recent hit-out for the Brett Carter-coached Panthers ended in a 34-20 loss to Bendigo Thunder at Weeroona Oval.

Eaglehawk’s back on its turf at C & M Oval in Canterbury Park to take on Bendigo Thunder.

The Molly Metcalf-coached Hawks teamed superbly for a 36-27 win against Wedge-Tailed Eagles at Woodend last round.

Key players for the Hawks include Monique Gavriliadis in the centre, Lexie Moss and Alannah Leach in defence, Caitlin Evans ruck-roving, and Kelly Mensforth, Shanae Sawyer and captain Eliza Long in attack.

Bendigo Thunder will be desperate for a goal or two after being held scoreless in its past two matches.

Players to watch for the Mick McInnes-coached Thunder include Stacey Barbagallo across half-forward, co-captains Sharlene Cole and Hollie Maher, Ngaire Harlan, Archie Mclachlan and Jasmine Alcon.

Four matches on Sunday will start at 11am.

It’s second against first as Eaglehawk meets Woorinen at C & M Oval in Eaglehawk’s Canterbury Park.

Golden Square will play Marong at Gourmet Pantry Oval in Golden Square’s Wade Street.

Storm fronts Echuca United at Triple M Park in Strathfieldsaye’s Tannery Lane.

Kangaroo Flat and White Hills clash on the Kangaroos’ ground at Bendigo Mazda Oval in Dower Park.
