CVFL Round 5 Seniors Review

Gun forwards fire across fifth round

GUN forwards dominated across the weekend’s fifth round of the Champions IGA-backed CVFL senior women’s footy season.

On Friday night, Castlemaine’s Brianna Burt booted seven goals in a 127-18 victory for the unbeaten ladder leaders on Eaglehawk’s turf at Canterbury Park.

The Jordan Cochrane-coached Castlemaine was under pressure in the opening term.

At the first break the Magpies led 14-12.

From there the premier of the past two seasons seized control.

Castlemaine won the second term, 33-nil, and then added 12.8 to a goal in the second half.

Burt was the dominant figure in the Pies’ attack this match and had great support from Eloise Gretgrix, four; Lily den Houting and Rachael Stubbings, two.

Recruited by Castlemaine by Bendigo Thunder, Burt was best afield in her fifth match for the black and white.

Also in the Magpies’ best against the Hawks were Tiahna Cochrane, Emma Pedretti, Lily den Houting, Hailee Browne-Kerr and Rebekah Forrest.

Best in a Borough line-up jointly coached by Molly Metcalf and Geoff West were Metcalf, Eliza Long, Cass Coleman, Ellie Bailey, Krystal Robinson and Jess Dover.

Golden Square’s attack was in great form in Friday night’s home game against Marong at the Wade Street Oval.

The Nathan Manuel-coached Golden Square raced to a 55-nil lead by quarter-time and had passed the century mark by the long break.

Isabella Ayre went on to kick a match-high seven goals and Paynton Jolliffe added six in a 199-nil victory.

Other multiple goalkickers for the blue and gold were Kate Douglass, five; Victoria Winstanley, four; Gabreille Drage, Courtney Hingston and Taylah Moore, two.

Golden Square’s best were Sarah Mannes, Isabella Ayre, Terina Pickering, Carly Geary, Courtney Hingston and Gemma Free.

Bianca Bourke, Hannah Cue, Regeena Torney, Dani Jeffery, Katrina Alford and Caitlin Shaw worked hard for a Marong team jointly coached by David Blume and Jimmy Evenden.

On Sunday, Woorinen was too strong for Sandhurst in the Tigers den on the spacious Woorinen Recreation Reserve.

A closely-fought first term went Woorinen’s way.

In the second the Tigers scored 7.2 to 1.1.

Inspired by the play of Courtney Wakefield, coach Katelyn Hazlett and Emma Peacock, Woorinen kicked on for a 136-27 victory.

A challenging hit-out for the Andrew Saladino-coached Sandhurst which had just 16 players available for this match.

The Tigers’ attack was led by Jenna Bannam, six; captain Tenay Fellows, five; Courtney Wakefield, four; Natasha Kelly and Brydi Lewis.

Goalkickers for Sandhurst were Lily Campbell and Amanda Carrod on two each.

Woorinen’s best included Jenna Bannam, Brydi Lewis and Casy Unger.

Best for Sandhurst were Ruby Campbell, Katie Walker, Amanda Carrod, Maddy White, Chloe Naughton and Chloe Taylor.

The Bendigo Thunder and White Hills match was not played at Weeroona Oval as White Hills forfeited.

CVFL senior women’s footy ladder:

Castlemaine 684 per cent, 20 points; Woorinen 318, 16; Golden Square 446, 12; Bendigo Thunder 78, 12; Sandhurst 138, 8; Eaglehawk 90, 8; White Hills 31, 4; North Bendigo 14, 0; Marong 2, 0.
