GOLDEN Square stayed on top of the under-16A ladder after a hard-fought win against South Bendigo in round 13 of the Bendigo Bank Bendigo Junior Football League season.
The Bulldogs were under pressure from the Bloods in the last quarter of Sunday’s match at Gourmet Pantry Oval in Golden Square’s Wade Street.
Six goals in the opening quarter gave Golden Square a 23-point lead at the first break.
The Bloods surged back to be within four points at half-time.
Golden Square led 69-54 going into the final term.
Although South Bendigo won the last, 14-7, it was the Bulldogs who held on for a 76-68 victory.
The Bulldogs’ attack was led by Jack Frankel and Xavier Stone on three and two goals as Carter Andrews, Nate Bishop, Evan Doye, Hudson Hayes, Charlie Macumber and Zak Rooke were also on target.
Best for Golden Square were Hudson Hayes, Kirk Garley, Ryan McLean, Nate Bishop, William Donnelly and Charlie Macumber.
In the under-16B competition, Golden Square scored a 23-point win against Huntly at Gourmet Pantry Oval.
The Huntly Hawks charged to a 28-6 lead by quarter-time.
Golden Square fought back to be up 31-29 at the main break.
The Bulldogs led 45-42 going into the final term.
At the siren the blue and gold was up 77-54.
Ethan Crocker kicked four goals as Raff Galagher slotted two.
Other goalkickers for the blue and gold were Declan Dupille, Jack Hargreaves, Max Haw, Caleb Kennedy, Harley Nelson and Cooper Pannett.
Best for the Bulldogs were Archer Brown, Louis Dalley, Raff Gallagher, Jack Hargreaves, Caleb Kennedy and Jacob Davies.
Golden Square played Sandhurst in the under-15 Girls match at Ewing Park.
The Sandhurst line-up won 47-28.
Goalkickers for Golden Square were Hayley Goodridge on two, and Emily Curnow and Molly Dang.
Frankie Garyfalakis, Molly Dang, Lily Gavin, Jazmine Bowland, Danika Bartram and Sophie Bourke were best for the blue and gold.
It was the clash of the Bulldogs and Hawks in the under-14A match at Huntly’s Strauch Reserve.
The Huntly line-up won 63-43.
Golden Square led 28-9 at half-time, but could not halt the brown and gold’s charge after the long break.
Goalkickers listed by Golden Square were Mason Roulston, two; and Max Carmichael and Alfie Uren.
The Bulldogs’ best were Jack Everett, Mason Roulston, Eddie Mansfield, Aidan Keena, Campbell Wright and Thomas Pluck.
Golden Square faced Castlemaine in the under-14B match at Gourmet Pantry Oval.
The Castlemaine Magpies swooped for a 114-15 result.

The round kicked off with Friday night’s under-12 Girls matches.
Golden Square won a closely-fought contest with South Bendigo at Harry Trott Oval in Kennington.
South Bendigo led 6-3 at half-time and 6-5 at three quarter-time.
A goal by Summer Novak put Golden Square in front in the last term.
The blue and gold worked hard to clinch an 11-6 victory.
Best for Golden Square were Lucia Penno, Jayla Hartley, Paige Finch, Emily Dowdell, Mia Hargreaves and Eliza Marshall-Wingrave.
Golden Square played St Francis in the under-12A match on St Francis Oval.
The St Francis line-up won 41-19.
Both of the Bulldogs’ goals were kicked by Cohen Goodridge.
Best for Golden Square were Oscar Scott, Meloz Pambai, Harvie Quinlan, Sonny Shevlin, Ryan Davies and Elias Monti.
The Bulldogs played Quarry Hill in the under-12C match at Gourmet Pantry Oval.
The Demons dominated the second quarter to lead 38-6 at the long break.
By the final siren Quarry Hill was up 73-20.

Mason Deveraux, Oscar Cole, Logan Kerrison, Archer Rielley, George Cowan and Ezekial Curran were best for the Bulldogs.
Golden Square scored a 13-goal win in the under-12D match against Marong at Jackal Oval in Marong’s Malone Park.
The Bulldogs led 85-7 at the final siren.
Mason Connell and Louis Jones kicked two goals each as Logan Bodilly, Tye Drew, Cooper Dodson, Tyler Flower, Jarryd Noble, Liam Woodburn, Aidan Woodhouse were also on target.
