GRFNL Round 10 Football Review | Wandella marks upset win against Moulamein

WANDELLA Bombers marked an upset win against Moulamein in Saturday’s 10th round of senior footy in the Golden Rivers FNL season.

The Bombers went into the match on home turf as underdogs against the second-placed Swans who had a 7-2 record.

In a high-scoring first half, Wandella won the opening term, 39-26, and scored 3.0 to 3.5 in the second.

The Bombers lifted their run and defensive play in the third term to score 6.1.

More importantly, Wandella held Moulamein to just five behinds to gain a 40-point buffer at a quarter to play.

The last went the way of the Swans, 27-7, but it was the Bombers who celebrated a hard-earned 101-81 victory.

Michael Rowe led Wandella’s attack on five goals as Matt Wilkinson added three.

The Bombers also had Russell Rich, Darren Rushton and Corey Walters chip in with two each.

Leading goalkicker for the Swans was Andy Silva on four as Nathan Buckley added two.

Wandella’s best were Russell Rich, Adam Ward, Declan Hogg, Jack Radcliffe, Michael Rowe and Logan Keighran.

Best for Moulamein were Blake Azzopardi, Will Gibson, Luke Shannon, Rodney Reeves, Cody Storm and Nathan Buckley.

The Bombers are now just a win behind the fourth-placed Macorna.

A showdown between the Macorna Tigers and Hay Lions at Macorna went Hay’s way.

The Tigers led 33-29 at quarter-time, but the Lions scored 3.2 to a point in the second.

A closely-fought third term went Macorna’s way, 16-12, but the Lions lifted in the last to add 5.3 to 1.1 to clinch a 94-57 victory.

Declan Watson was in superb form as he kicked nine goals for Hay and Fergus Cattanach added two.

The Tigers’ attack was led by Lachlan Ritchie, three; and Josh Cameron, two.

Hay’s best were Will Clark, Declan Watson, Luke Arandt, Daniel Zambon, Kenneth Jubb and Andrew Low.

Toby Whinfield, Nick Ingleton, Lachlan Thompson, Alex Ingleton, Josh Cameron and Harley Somerville were Macorna’s best.

Ultima’s unbeaten run has reached 10 after a 103-37 result at home against Murrabit.

The Kangaroos led 59-20 at half-time and then scored 6.8 to 2.5 in the second.

Bailey Codling kicked a match-high three goals for Ultima as Tyler Makepeace and Kyle Symons added two majors.

Damian Cupido and Morgan Randall kicked two goals for Murrabit.

Ultima’s best were Tyler Makepeace, Caillum Brady, Jamie Nicholas, Bailey Codling, Jacob Schaper and Jake Foster.

Rhys Carmichael, Ryan Manning, Nathan O’Toole, Jono Aujard, Dustin Blake and Michael Crossett played well for Murrabit.

Golden Rivers FNL senior footy ladder:

Ultima 182 per cent, 40 points; Moulamein 114, 28; Hay 113, 24; Macorna 94, 12; Wandella 77, 8; Murrabit 57, 8.

It’s a general bye for the league next Saturday.

In the 11th round on July 8, Hay plays Ultima at Hay from 2.25pm.

Macorna and Wandella clash in Tigers territory at Macorna Recreation Reserve.

Moulamein is at home to play Murrabit.
