Hawks end series perched on fourth rung

EAGLEHAWK has ended the home-and-away series in the Champions IGA-backed CVFL senior women’s footy competition perched on the fourth rung and into another finals campaign.

The Hawks leapt from the fifth rung after last Sunday’s win at White Hills by 23 points.

As the Two Blues triumphed a 20-point loss for Wedge-Tailed Eagles to Sandhurst in Woodend ended season for the Phil Hawkes-coached Eagles.

The ladder-leading Golden Square warmed up for the finals by scoring a 190-point win against Bendigo Thunder.

It was a rest for reigning premier Castlemaine as Marong forfeited the match scheduled for Jackal Oval in Marong’s Malone Park.

The Molly Metcalf-coached Eaglehawk faced a must-win match against White Hills in the Demons’ den in Scott Street.

The Borough led 21-7 at quarter-time.

A White Hills team coached by Sharni Barker and Allara Jackson turned up the heat in the second quarter.

As the Demons scored 3.2 they kept the Hawks to a tally of 1.1.

When the siren sounded for half-time it was Eaglehawk which led 28-27.

The Hawks doubled their score in the third quarter to lead 56-34 going into the last term.

A closely-fought quarter went the way of the Two Blues, 15-14, on their way to a 71-48 victory.

The Hawks’ attack was led by Caitlin Evans and Monique Gavriliadis on three and two goals.

Seisia White slotted three goals for White Hills as Courtney Collard kicked two.

Eaglehawk’s best were Monique Gavriliadis, Emily Galtieri, Lucy El Hage, Molly Metcalf, Emily Field and Kelly Mensforth.

Best for White Hills were Jorja Gibson, Sasha Pearce, Ella Henery, Tracey Anderson, Keely Fullerton and Seisia White.

A brilliant start by Sandhurst put Wedge-Tailed Eagles under immense pressure at Woodend’s Racecourse Reserve.

This match the Sandhurst team was coached by Liam Ireland as co-coach Andrew Saladino had commitment coaching Heathcote’s seniors in the Heathcote DFNL elimination final in Elmore.

Sandhurst raced to a 20-1 lead by quarter-time and was up 28-2 at the long break.

The Eagles lifted their play to win the third term, 8-1.

The last went the way of the maroon and blue, 7-6, on the way to a 36-16 victory.

Grace Campbell kicked two goals for Sandhurst as Sarah Baldwin, Mackenzie Brouwer and Ava Franklin added one each.

The Eagles’ goals were kicked by Jorja Bennett and Amber Gajic.

Best for Sandhurst were Taylah Klemm, Lily Campbell, Ava Franklin, Chloe Taylor and Milla Franklin.

The Eagles’ best were Ayesha Nicholson, Teagan Ainslie, Belinda Hateley, Aisha Mansfield, Dana Raguz and Lilly Sellar.

Golden Square racked up 47 scoring shots in a dominant performance at home against Bendigo Thunder at Gourmet Pantry Oval in Wade Street.

The Bulldogs scored 13 goals in the first quarter and followed up with tallies of six, three and seven goals across the next three terms.

At the final siren the Darren Walsh-coached Golden Square led 192-nil.

An 11-goal haul by Gabby Drage lifted her season tally to 76 in 17 matches.

Other multiple goalkickers for the blue and gold were Kira Gibbons with five as Taylah Moore, Ruby Demeo, Kate Douglass and Gemma Roberts added two each.

Best for Golden Square were Ava Barker, Gabby Drage, Carly Geary, Bianca Bourke, Taylah Moore and Kira Gibbons.

Stacey Barbagallo, Hollie Maher, Jasmine Alcon, Sarah Lean, Ngaire Harlan and Shasta Martion were best for the Mick McInnes-coached Thunder.

In the Champions IGA-backed CVFL under-18 girls competition, Woorinen has ended the 15-round home-and-away series with an unbeaten run of 15 matches.

The Tigers claimed the points last Sunday without playing as Castlemaine forfeited a match set down to be played in Woorinen.

Closest margin of the day was 27 points where Sandhurst won on Kangaroo Flat’s ground at Bendigo Mazda Oval in Dower Park.

Sandhurst led 30-8 at quarter-time and 49-14 by the long break.

A closely-fought third term went the way of the Dragons, 18-13.

Kangaroo Flat worked hard to score 2.2 in the last as the visitors added a point.

At the final siren Sandhurst led 68-41.

Etta Place and Charlotte Comer led Sandhurst’s attack on three and two goals.

Kangaroos’ gun forward Matilda Rose kicked a match-high five goals.

Sandhurst’s best were Macey Pinner, Ellie Bellenger, Tully Place, Abigail Schmidt, Addison Magro and Lily Carter.

Kangaroo Flat’s best were Ava Ahearn, Felicia Buovac, London Benaim, Miller Lindrea, Matilda Rose and Charlotte Wylie.

The Marong Panthers scored a six-goal win against Echuca United at Jackal Oval in Marong’s Malone Park.

The Panthers led 13-nil at quarter-time and 21-6 by the long break.

As Marong scored 3.2 in the third it kept the Eagles to a tally of 1.2.

The Panthers won the last, nine-nil, on their way to a 50-14 victory.

Phoebe England capped a great match with five goals as Emma O’Toole and Tianna Shay were also on target.

The Eagles’ goals were kicked by Willow Clark and Charlie Martin.

Marong’s best were Phoebe England, Emma O’Toole, Alyssa Wardell, Frankie Stevens, Olive Rogers and El Taylor.

Echuca United’s best were Lily Dunham, Ava Plattfuss, Zarlia Jenkins, Isabella Nathan, Jordi Howe and Mia Siede.

In Strathfieldsaye it was Storm which warmed up for the finals by scoring a 57-point win against Golden Square at Triple M Park in Tannery Lane.

The Golden Square team played a fine first quarter to lead 9-6 at the break.

Storm scored five goals in the second as the Bulldogs added two.

As Strathfieldsaye added 3.4 in the third it kept Golden Square scoreless.

Jorja Cunningham, Forest Jackson-Leahy and Marlie Skinner finished the match with three goals each and Rania Jackson-Leahy added two as Storm marked an 86-29 victory.

Goalkickers for Golden Square were Jayde Chappel, Charlize Humme, Lucy Johansen and Evelyn Williams.

Storm’s best were Isabella Stevens, Marlie Skinner, Jorja Cunningham, Emily Neave, Chella Fitzgerald and Nadia Sampson.

Jayde Chappel, Evelyn Williams, Sihanna Carter, Lucy Johansen, Charlize Humme and Shoshanna Love played well for the blue and gold.

White Hills scored a 64-28 win against Eaglehawk in the Demons’ den in Scott Street.

Layla O’Brien kicked four goals as Maddison Collard added three and Adele McNaughton booted two majors for the red and black.
