Huntly clings to fifth rung on A-grade netball ladder

HUNTLY holds fifth place on the A-grade netball ladder after Saturday’s 15th round in the Bendigo Bank Heathcote District Football Netball League season.

The Hawks and North Bendigo are in a fight to grab fifth place and feature in the finals action.

In Saturday’s resumption to the season, Huntly took on Leitchville Gunbower at Specialist Breeders Australia Oval in Huntly’s Strauch Reserve.

The Hawks took control in the third quarter and kept working hard to record a 45-32 victory.

For several teams a goal on Saturday was for some A-reserve players to be given a chance on court and to qualify for finals.

North Bendigo faced a huge challenge against the unbeaten Elmore.

The team in red, white and blue worked hard against a powerful Elmore line-up.

Strong defence was a feature of Elmore’s play in a 66-43 result.

A star in Golden Square’s dominant era on the netball court and a long-time player for Bendigo Spirit and Bendigo Braves basketball teams, Gabe Richards was back in Elmore’s attack.

Richards and rising star Abbey Hromenko capped off plenty of Elmore’s work in the other two-thirds of the court.

The race to take third place and double chance at finals time is far from finished.

White Hills held onto the third rung after a 58-10 win on Lockington’s court at Nichol Trading Oval.

The Demons are feeling the heat from a Mount Pleasant line-up which scored a 54-38 victory in Saturday’s showdown with Heathcote at Toolleen.

Standings in the Heathcote DFNL A-grade netball competition:

Elmore 197 per cent, 48 points; Colbinabbin 156, 44; White Hills 125, 34; Mount  Pleasant 117, 34; Huntly 98, 26; North Bendigo 89, 24; Heathcote 67, 14; Leitchville Gunbower 54, 8; Lockington Bamawm United 49, 4.

In next Saturday’s 16th round, White Hills hosts Huntly at Tint A Car Oval in Scott Street.

North Bendigo takes on Lockington Bamawm United at Hibo Hotel Oval in Atkins Street.

It’s second against fourth as Colbinabbin and Mount Pleasant meet on Colbo’s court at M.J. Morgan Reserve.

Heathcote faces Elmore at Pigeon Park in Heathcote’s Barrack Reserve.

Leitchville Gunbower has the bye.
