Kangaroos score vital win on their court

KANGAROO Flat scored a vital win against the powerful Gisborne line-up in the A-grade netball clash as the Bendigo Bank Bendigo Football Netball League marked Indigenous Round on Saturday.

The Roos and Gisborne had match of the day status as second played third on the Kangaroos’ court at Dower Park.

There were several fightbacks by the visitors throughout a closely-fought contest, but the Jayden Cowling-coached Kangaroo Flat took control midway through the second term on its way to a 52-40 result.

Best for the Roos was Milly Wicks at wing defence as Lou Dupuy and Abbey Ryan led the attack.

Recruited to Gisborne from Riddell, Kirby Elliott was again in great form.

The Roos have a 6-1 record and now lead Gisborne by a win as both strive to keep the pressure on the unbeaten and ladder-leading Sandhurst.

It was a thrilling finish to the Eaglehawk and Kyneton match at Canterbury Park.

The Hawks led by five goals at the start of the final term, but the Tigers roared back into the contest to take the lead.

Eaglehawk responded to the challenge and worked hard to claim a 44-43 victory.

Highlights for the Two Blues were the play of Grace Berriman in attack, and Charlotte Edlin in mid-court.

South Bendigo returned to the winners’ list in style.

Led by the play of Chloe Gray in mid-court, Chloe Langley in attack and Steph Goode in defence, the Bloods were too strong for Strathfieldsaye at Queen Elizabeth Oval.

The Jannelle Hobbs-coached South Bendigo also had former Eaglehawk and White Hills goalshooter Ash Gilmore take to the court for a half in the 65-41 victory.

A brilliant defender, Ruby Turner starred once again and Bec Smith’s hot hands near the net were key factors as Sandhurst marked a 67-45 win on Maryborough’s court at Princes Park.

Golden Square put in a strong defensive effort to limit Castlemaine to 44 goals in their match at Fur Life Oval in Wade Stret.

The Magpies won 44-31, but the blue and gold marked one of its best matches of the season.

In Saturday’s eighth round, South Bendigo takes on Maryborough at the QEO.

Castlemaine and Eaglehawk clash at Camp Reserve.

Strathfieldsaye faces Kangaroo Flat at Triple M Park in Tannery Lane.

Gisborne and Golden Square play on the Gardiner Reserve court.
