Macorna marks winning start in Eagles’ nest

MACORNA’S senior footy team marked a winning start in the Bendigo Bank Loddon Valley FNL debut on Saturday in Maiden Gully.

Having crossed from the defunct Golden Rivers league, Macorna took on Maiden Gully YCW Eagles at Marist College Oval.

The Tigers charged to a 46-20 lead by half-time and then broke the game wide open in the third quarter.

As the Fergus Payne-coached Macorna scored 2.4 it kept the Eagles scoreless.

The last term went the Tigers way, 25-22, as players, officials and supporters celebrated an 87-42 victory.

Will Meharry led the attack on three goals as Alex Cockerell and Kieran Foley added two.

Leading goalkicker for the Eagles was Luke Gray on two.

Best for Macorna were Matt Colak, Sam Whinfield, Fergus Payne, Will Meharry, Josh Whittle and Toby Whinfield.

Mitch Hill, Josiah Farrer, Luke Gray, Isaac Neretlis, Mitch Whitham and Anthony Robins were best for the Shawn Filo-coached Eagles.

Calivil United overcame a 29-point deficit at quarter-time to score a 10-point win on Mitiamo’s ground at John Forbes Oval.

The Luke Lougoon-coached Mitiamo slammed on 4.9 in the opening term.

By half-time Calivil United was back within a point.

The Superoos won the third, 8-4, but it was the Demons who fired up in the last to score 3.5 as Mitiamo added 1.2.

At the final siren the Sam Maher-coached Calivil United was up 59-49.

The Demons’ attack was led by Henry McCarthy on three goals as Aidan Roulston and Liam Stephens added two.

Brent Arho kicked a match-high four goals for Mitiamo.

Recruited from Golden Square, Zac Tickell was best afield for the Demons and had great support from Jack Maher, Rhys Lourie, Henry McCarthy, Aidan Roulston and Tyler Rasmussen.

Ryan Duncan, Zach Cruse, Joey Mizzi, Zak Myers, Seth Wright and Daniel Baldwin were Mitiamo’s best.

Pyramid Hill staged a brilliant final quarter fightback to win at Inglewood’s Centre State Scaffolding Oval by 21 points.

The Jarrod Fitzpatrick-coached Bulldogs were by 21 points at the start of the last term.

Inspired by the play of Fitzpatrick, Jhye Baddeley-Kelly and Cameron Ross, Pyramid Hill scored 6.8 and kept the Blues to just two points in the final quarter.

Mitch Dingwall and Harrison Goodes finished with three goals as Jhye Baddeley-Kelly and Ben Knight slotted two in an 85-64 victory for the red, white and blue.

Inglewood’s attack was led by Bregon Cotchett and Mischa Fraillon with two.

Best for Pyramid Hill included James Sala, Mitch Dingwall and Ben Knight.

Charlie Aitken, Curtis Day, Mischa Fraillon, Liam Marciano, Tom Kennedy and Gabe Nevins were best for the Jackson Hood-coached Blues.

Marong unfurled the ’25 premiership flag, the fourth it had won in a row, before it took on Bears Lagoon-Serpentine at Marong’s Malone Park.

A new-look Marong coached by James Flaherty led 33-14 at quarter-time and 38-28 by the long break.

The Panthers took control in the third term as they scored four goals and kept the Bears to a solitary major.

Jack McCaig finished with three goals as Max Balcke and Cooper Hale added two in an 80-55 win by the Panthers.

The Bears’ attack was led by James Bailey, Charlie Gadsden and Frasier Holland on two.

Best for Marong were Jack McCaig, Matt Willox, David Johnstone, Jai Gretgrix, Noah McCaig and Jimmy Gadsden.

Nathan Twigg, Tanner Rayner, Tyler Miles, Darcy Hawker, coach Jake Wilkinson and Charlie Gadsden were best for the BLS line-up.

Runner-up last September, Bridgwater kicked off a new season with a 100-point victory at home against Newbridge.

The Mean Machine led 38-14 at quarter-time and then clicked up a few gears as it slammed on eight goals in the second.

Bridgewater led 88-17 at half-time.

Oscar McKinley and Bridgewater coach and last season’s Harding medallist in Lachie Sharp went on to kick six goals as Mitch Patten booted four in the 136-36 victory.

Newbridge’s attack was led by former North Bendigo player Zaiyden Richards with two.

Best for Bridgewater were Joseph Mayes, Oscar McKinley, Connor Flynn, Darcy Wood, Mitch Patten and Jacob Ellings.

Jack McInerney, Jed Zimmer, Andrew Willett, Jon Coe and Kyan Dooley were best for the Jayden Cordy-coached Maroons.

In the Netball………..INGLEWOOD’S lengthy wait for victory in A-grade netball has ended after Saturday’s first round win against Pyramid Hill in Bendigo Bank Loddon Valley FNL action.

The Dani O’Toole-coached Blues teamed superbly on their court at Centre State Scaffolding Oval in Inglewood to record a 48-44 win against the Bulldogs.

Pyramid Hill is being coached by Chelsea Emmerson, Amber Dingwall and Darci Tierney.

It was a dramatic finish to the clash between Bridgewater and Newbridge at Bridgewater Recreation Reserve.

The Hayley Martiniello-coached Newbridge won 42-40.

Carly Wild and Lou Dupuy have teamed up to coach Bridgewater.

Reigning premier, Mitiamo made a strong start on its court at John Forbes Oval.

The Jen Wilson-coached Superoos bound their way to a 79-36 win against a Calivil United team coached by Annie Blow and Alex Ingram.

Marong fought on for a five-goal win against Bears-Lagoon Serpentine in the Panthers’ den at Malone Park.

The Bridget Willox and Bianca Garton-coached Marong led 49-44 at the final siren.

Maiden Gully YCW Eagles faced league newcomer, Macorna at Marist College Oval.

The Christie Griffiths-coached Eagles won a closely-fought match, 32-25.
