Magpies from Castlemaine and Maryborough fly high
THE Magpie tribes from Castlemaine and Maryborough were flying high across the weekend’s grading matches in the Bendigo Junior Football League.
It was week two of grading for the under-12 Mixed, under-14 Mixed, under-15 Girls, and under-16 Boys competition.
Castlemaine was in hot form in the under-14 Mixed clash with Kangaroo Flat at Bendigo’s Ewing Park.
The Magpies had 59 scoring shots on their way to a 249-nil victory at the Williamson Street ground.
Declan Brasher, Zane Davidge and Mitchell Sturgess all kicked five goals as Xavier Britt, Charlie Cordy, Abraham Harrington and Jomal Nicholson added three each.
Other goalkickers for the black and white were Spencer Grainger, Louis Parsons, two; Fian Blundell, Archie Culph, Will Fitzgerald, Cohan Lyne, Seth McGill, Darcy Minster and Arlo Speer.
Best for the Magpies were Zane Davidge, Declan Brasher, Xavier Britt, Abraham Harrington, Charlie Cordy and Spencer Grainger.
Maryborough made its way to Jackal Oval in Marong’s Malone Park to tackle the Marong Panthers.
The Panthers led 26-22 at quarter-time and then scored 2.10 as it kept the Magpies scoreless in the second.
Maryborough fought back strongly to win the third term, 37-13, and moved within two points going into the final term.
The Panthers then seized control to score seven goals in the last to record a 107-61 victory.
Cody Jamieson and Jakobi Wills led Maryborough’s attack on two goals as Ed Boyes, Jarrod Collicoat, Isaac Kirk, Jack Smith and Cruz Stevens were on target.
Best for the Magpies were Cruz Stevens, Jack Smith, Jai Andriske, Jarrod Collicoat, Ed Boyes and Cody Jamieson.
The under-15 girls team from Castlemaine dominated Sunday’s match with North Bendigo at Bendigo Club Oval in North Bendigo’s Atkins Street.
Co-captain Kate Batchelor and co vice-captain Tegan Barry kicked four goals apiece in a 119-nil victory.
Other goalkickers for the Magpies were Amelia Brown, Evie Mountford on two each, and co vice-captain Kirah Jayne, Madison Pepper, co-captain Olivia Rose and Daisy Rowe.
Best for Castlemaine were Olivia Rose, Evie Mountford, Kate Batchelor, Sierra Morgan, Verity Greenwell and Tegan Barry.
Castlemaine racked up 38 scoring shots in a 133-1 victory against South Bendigo (3) in the under-12 Mixed grading match on Saturday at Wesley Hill.
The Magpies scored nine goals and 10 goals in the second.
Co-captain Ted Cordy led the attack on six goals as Darcy Brown, Seb Collie and Jhi McKenzie kicked two each.
Other goalkickers for the Pies were Ben Batchelor, Miles Cheesman, co-captain Harry Evans, Eliza Minster, Jufour Nyok, Reuben O’Sullivan and Sid Wiese.
Castlemaine’s best were Ted Cordy, Jhi McKenzie, Harry Evans, Miles Cheesman, George Cordy and Sid Wiese.
Maryborough’s under-12 team dominated its home game against Golden Square (2) at Princes Park.
The Magpies won 87-nil as Charlie Wilson kicked four goals and Manny Shepherd added two.
Other goalkickers for the Borough were Alfie Boyes, Xavier Clark, Kyzer Lawton, Patrick Noonan, Charlie and Tyson Smith.
The Magpies’ best were Noah Thomson, Charlie Wilson, Charlie Smith, Ollie Cox, Hardy Heathcock and Alfie Boyes.
In under-16 boys grading, Maryborough was on home turf at Princes Park for Sunday’s clash with Strathfieldsaye (2).
The Strathfieldsaye team led 50-42 at three quarter-time and then scored 4.2 and held the Magpies to a point in the final term to complete a 76-43 victory.
Goalkickers for Maryborough were captain Oliver Cassidy on three, and Aiden Collicoat Paul Maiore and Wil Smith.
Best for the Magpies were Hayden Bartlett, Aiden Collicoat, Paul Maiore, Jase Cicchini, Darcy Hoban and Jayden Humphrey.
Castlemaine was at home at Wesley Hill for Sunday’s clash with South Bendigo (1).
The young Bloods charged to a 29-nil lead by quarter-time and were up 49-9 at the main break.
Castlemaine worked hard to score seven goals in the second half as the Bloods ran out 131-54 winners.
Best for the Magpies were Zach Thompson, Lewis Murray, Harper Kneebone, Ben Lalit and Zach Marshall.
It was week two in the home-and-away series for the under-12 Girls played on Friday night.
Golden Square scored a 21-point win against White Hills at the Scott Street ground in White Hills.
Best for Golden Square were Stella Tully, Ruby Carter, Makayla Soko and Abigail Potter.
The Demons’ best were Marley House, Lilly Tresize, Eliza Renwick-Deards and Dakota Petersen.
It was a closely-fought match between South Bendigo Red and Eaglehawk at Harry Trott Oval in Kennington.
The Bloods led 13-6 at quarter-time and then scored two goals as it kept the Hawks to a point in the second term.
Both teams added a goal in the second half as the Reds won 31-14.
Leila Pellegrino kicked three goals and was South Bendigo’s best along with Remi Morrice, Mackinnon Murphy and Maddison Parsons.
Ivy Thorpe, Sienna McDonald, Addilyn Westaway and Ruby Hansford played well for Eaglehawk.
South Bendigo White defeated Marong Yellow by 95 points at Kennington’s Harry Trott Oval.
Gemma Elliott kicked three goals for the Bloods in a 97-2 result.
Best for South Bendigo were Darcy Ketterer-Smith, Eadie Gogoll, Gemma Elliott and Indi Saunders.
Josie White, Letty Lovell, Elizabeth Morris and Mia Trembath played well for Marong.
St Therese’s marked a 105-7 win against Marong Blue at Bendigo’s Ewing Park.
Perry Westley kicked eight goals in a best afield feat for the Sharks as Eily Ellis-Fedke added three.
Best for St Therese’s were Perry Westley, Willow Jeffrey, Sage Reid and Florence Lapthorne.
Sophie Wardell, Imogen Coghill, Airlie Swanton and Izzy Evans were best the Panthers.
St Francis Green kicked away for a 56-nil win against Mount Pleasant at White Hills.
Tilly Stewart and Ariah Villani kicked two goals for St Francis.
Best for the Green team were Billie McCulloch, Albie Tyler and Samantha Perry.
Eliza Carmody, Remmi Comer and Audrey James played well for the Blues.
Rochester had the bye.
